I'm having some trouble importing an Excel file to start a new project. I keep getting the message "inspecting selected files," and something appears to be loading, but nothing else is happening. I've tried doing this in Firefox and Chrome. I've tried closing everything out and restarting my computer. I've tried using refine.bat instead of openrefine.exe, but that doesn't appear to be launching. Any suggestions?

I've had a problem similar to this in the past.  My solution was to export out of Excel as a CSV file and then create the Refine project from the CSV file.

1. Try using OpenRefine 2.6 RC2

We fixed a number of issues with Excel importing in 2.5

2. You might have an Excel file with various bits that cause an issue loading into OpenRefine which is using the POI library to do the heavy lifting.
You can instead open the file in Excel or LibreOffice and try to export as a CSV or TSV and then try to load that CSV/TSV into OpenRefine.

Also recommend making sure the Excel file doesn't have large numbers of blank columns because this will cause problems when you load the file as OR creates all the blank columns.

Delete any extra blank cols in Excel before you try to load the file
