For a distance education course, we've shipped OpenRefine inside a VirtualBox Linux machine (along with several other packages), setting the OpenRefine project file to be a folder shared with the host.

We've had several reports from users on a Windows host of OpenRefine losing sight of all the projects - has anyone tried a similar approach and suffered a similar issue? Any idea of the cause, or a fix?

Tony,

I don't know if this is specific to having OpenRefine hosted on a VM. Going through the last few months of messages and I found several other people reporting what seems similar issues:
A couple of questions to help to narrow down this issue:

1. Extra information regarding the browser, OS and version of OpenRefine is always welcome

2. Did you try to open a particular project using its URL, for example: http://127.0.0.1:3333/project?project=1946026776557
where 1946026776557 is the project archive name ;  or via the browser history function? This will help to identify if the issue if from the front end to list all projects or at the project storage / saving level.

3. Did this happen on brand new instance of OpenRefine or appear over time? Does a certain number of project trigger the issue?

This might be a good candidate to report it as an issue via github.

I will try to collate the various issues that students have raised and see if I can categorise them... Big issue for me is that I haven't had the issue (and also our students are distance ed students, so no local machines to look at)! Are there any ways I can get detailed debug/log statements out of OpenRefine? (I could try to get some volunteers to collect those...)

I'm wondering if it's a shared folder mount issue...:-( There have been other networking related issues and VirtualBox seems to be quite sensitive (eg to Windows updates)

Maybe you shutdown the vm directly. Try to gracefully shutdown the OR(by press ctrl-c, press Y) and wait for the sync to the host share folder then shutdown the vm.
