Hi,

Does my application need to read the once-a-day Darwin FTP file in addition to consuming XML feed in order to understand all the train schedules for the day? For instance, if my application starts with an empty database at 8am in the morning, will listening to the feed provide enough information to fill in the picture for the rest of the day or do I need to read the FTP file so that I understand the underlying schedule, then listen to the feed to be informed of changes?

Thanks,
Duncan

Hi Duncan

If depends on what you're using the data for.

If you just want to know actual arrival/departure times, I think it should be sufficient to just process the real-time messages.  From memory (and it's a while since I looked closely at it), when a train is going to run, Darwin will send its schedule through so you'll get all the calling points.

Initially I just need to know arrival, departure and passing times. Eventually I will extend the functionality to look ahead into the schedule and advise of connections, etc.

Great, thanks. I'll try working just off the feed for now. Perhaps I'll need to pull in the FTP file once I build the "look ahead" capability.
