How to identify disconnected segments (islands)?

I am drawing a large map on OpenJump. How can I locate any islands so that I can link them to the mainland?

Hi, can you explain how you draw the islands (polygons ?) and how you want to connect them to the mainland?
How is the mainland drawn? a polygon?
