Hello,
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this request so apologies if I've infringed the group netiquette. I teach journalism at MMU so I'm developing some basic in-class projects my students can work on.
I'm looking for some simple (ideally kml) boundary files for Manchester to work on with students, specifically for elections. So, for example, a shape file for councils in Greater Manchester. I can't find any. Is anybody able to help with this? I'd like to be able to use them in a Google fusion table.
Cheers
Liz

Super quick response, might be stating the obvious but have you
checked data.gov?

Try this for example: https://data.gov.uk/dataset/boundary-line

I know Greater Manchester Poverty Action have used this data, eg
http://www.gmpovertyaction.org/. If you don't get anywhere can ask the
dev who coded this (don' think he's in this group).

Welcome!

Kim

Hi Liz

Great to hear from you!

As Kim points out, Boundary Line is a useful dataset - more on that , and other OS open data products, via https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/business-and-government/products/boundary-line.html

The Mapit service from MySociety is always useful - esp as you can access boundary files as KML (Justin used this for poverty action), eg:  http://mapit.mysociety.org/area/2528.html

Google Fusion tables can also be useful - ie: http://mapit.mysociety.org/area/2528.html

And - the Open Data Communities site from DCLG could be worth checking - eg: http://opendatacommunities.org/data/ons-geography-administration - esp in terms of their sowcase: http://news.opendatacommunities.org/apps-showcase/ - Ric/Bill from Swirrl might be able to advise further on access to boundary data

Hope that helps

Thanks

Steven

Hi Liz,

A couple of years ago I made a fusion table with the info you're after, details below.

Here's a fusion table with wards and LAs, from 2014 but I believe no boundaries have changed since then:

Hope you're aware of https://democracyclub.org.uk/

On phone so apologies for brevity, happy to help more anon.

Cheers, Jonathan.

@admins - so I can reply from my default address, please can one of you 'direct add' jona...@gmcc.org.uk to the google group, with no email subscription?

Cheers, Jonathan.

Hi Liz - the Office for National Statistics have a portal for boundary files - https://geoportal.statistics.gov.uk/geoportal/catalog/main/home.page

It's a bit clunky, (and seems to not be working right now!) but might have what you need.

Thanks

There does seem to be a problem with the search facility on the main page, however the three links below are working fine.

I couldn't find an updated 2016 file but if you do need the new boundaries for Bristol, Sheffield etc then one of us could ask MySociety or DemocracyClub for them. To highlight where boundaries have changed they made: http://2016wards.mysociety.org/

You're also welcome to show your students this uk-wide ward, LA and County lookup system (responses available as json too). It's just a way to access Mapit data, with a standardised two-dimensional output that includes the various types of ward etc used across the UK. It also does a couple of Google requests to get street address info without requiring a subscription to the Royal Mail's PAF system. I'll update it to include Combined Authority details from these new ONS files 1 2. They're only small so pasted below for people's info.

Cheers, Jonathan.
