ODC Folks,
At the end of the hangout, we had some questions about the degree to which Azavea was interested in continuing to manage ongoing development of the Open Data Catalog project. Azavea manages a few open source projects that are central to our company's mission, but we open-sourced the Open Data Catalog simply because someone asked to use the code, so the growth of interest has caught us a bit unprepared. In response to the question in the hangout, I hedged and said I'd need to talk to my colleagues and determine if someone was interested in managing this over time. There were some others on the hangout that offered to potentially take on the responsibility as well.
After some internal discussions, I'm pleased to announce that Adam Hinz has agreed to devote his R&D project to extending and enhancing Open-Data-Catalog. So, at least for the next several months, Azavea is committed to remaining in the role of managing the source code. Some initial activities Adam has identified include:
* Manage the issue tracker
* Review pull requests submitted to GitHub
* Develop a roadmap
* Implement a versioning scheme in order to reduce disruptions from updates
* Fix bugs
* Improve JS performance
* Improve data loading process when getting a catalog up and running
* Integrate pycsw with ODC (which will require adding support for Django to pycsw)
* Develop a a more generalized data storage mechanism (one that goes beyond the geospatial storage capabilities of pycsw)
* Some longer term activities may include discussion of how to work with GeoNode and visualization of data stored in the catalog
Please feel free to send your ideas and feedback about prioritizing ODC improvements to this either this list or directly to Adam (
ah...@azavea.com).
Best,
Robert
