Hi,

I have been running PHD since in first came out on a stable observatory system running XP. Because it is stable  I only update software when strictly necessary. I am currently updating from PHD 2.2.2a to 2.6.5 so I can use a new ZWO guide camera. The new version of PHD2 works with the ZWO camera but the "ASCOM telescope chooser" mount option is missing so I cannot now connect  to the mount (using EQASCOM and ASCOM 5a)  The obvious next step would be to try upgrading to ASCOM 6  but this could potentially generate other problems so I am reluctant to try this unless it will definitely cure the problem with PHD2.  Would upgrading ASCOM fix the problem or should I be looking for other solutions?

Thanks
Robin

Hi Robin,

EQMOD ASCOM is one of the selections in the mount drop-down list:

BTW, if you have not seen it already, check out EQMOD ASCOM Settings for PHD2.

Hi Andy,

No it isn’t there, that’s the problem. I have been using EQASCOM for years with PHD but now I have I updated to 2.6.5 this is all I see in the mount drop down list compared with 2.2.2

Thanks
Robin

Ok, from the screenshot we see that PHD2 is not finding *any* ASCOM devices. Could you upload your PHD2 Debug Log so I can take a look? (Instructions)

Ok, thanks for the log. It is showing that ASCOM 5 is not being recognized by PHD2 at all.

Unfortunately I don't have a simple solution for you. Since Microsoft stopped supporting XP in 2014, developers (PHD2, ASCOM, and camera driver developers) are not able to run our development tools on XP. That means we have no way to diagnose or fix problems on XP.

My recommendation would be to update to a MS-supported OS version like Windows 7 or Windows 10, then update to the latest ASCOM platform.  That way you will be able to use the latest and most stable camera drivers, ASCOM platform, and PHD2 software.

If you prefer not to do that and stick with XP, then you'll be limited to older cameras and older software versions that work on XP.  Sadly our hands are tied not being able to work on XP.

Hi Andy,

Would it be worth me trying the earliest version of PHD which supported ZWO cameras?  Is it available for download ?

Thanks
Robin

I don't recommend using older versions, but the older versions are available if you are determined to try.  I'm forwarding you an email with links to all the older versions. I don't remember which version was the first to add ZWO camera support, so you'll need to use trial and error.

Thanks Andy,

Upgrading windows would open  a whole can of worms with compatibility with other software and hardware so I will probably stick with the current setup until a computer replacement or other hardware failure forces the issue.

Hi Robin

I'm still using XP SP3 on an old Thinkpad X41 and dock, and current PHD2 Devs and ASCOM 6 work fine, running the Meade LX200GPS ASCOM mount driver, and ZW0 ASI 120MM camera.

So trying an old PHD2 version could at least help find where the ASCOM options have gone to, even if there's no ZWO support.

Excellent !  Thanks Michael.  It sounds like  I should go ahead and upgrade to ASCOM  6 first and see where that takes me.

Updating to ASCOM 6.4 brought up the ASCOM options in the latest PHD2 back so it looks like I am back in business

Thanks!
