Record formatted signals to time-series data collection

Hi,

     I have a string type signal defined in my module. I want to use the signal mechanism for the data collection (or other mechanisms?). The ideal entry of the collection is (timestamp, string record). I tried to use @statistics and catch the emitted signal as a vector. Apparently it doesn't work this way (VectorRecorder complaints it cannot convert the signal to double). Can anyone give me some hint on how to do this? I thought this could be a very common thing that people would want to do. I have searched related keywords in this group but didn't find anything helpful.
