Hi all,

We've been seeing reports of the Zoom.it plugin not working, both on the Omeka forums [0][1], and from students working on projects for our exhibitions. Is there a preferred alternative at this point? I came across Daniel Berthereau's OpenLayersZoom plugin [2], which seems promising, but I'd be curious if the Omeka team is recommending anything in particular at this point.

Thanks,
Mark

I can't say that we have a recommendation for alternatives, nor a
decision about what the future path might be for us (updating and
fixing, aiming toward another service, etc)

Hi,
we use the OpenLayersZoom plugin to display our maps and (even if we should work on integration), it works really fine out of the box : http://1886.u-bordeaux3.fr/items/browse?type=14

Hi,

I wonder if your plugin is used in Omeka?

I have images that tiled using OpenLayersZoom and I am looking for a viewer since the one I used is not supported bc it is using Flash.

I am new to this images and viewers and I am trying to understand more about it.

Thanks
Nancy

Nancy,

If you like, I can send you information on how to use OpenSeaDragon in your theme with the tiles created by OpenLayersZoom. I don't have a plugin written for this, but it is a simple implementation in the theme files.

Peace,
Walt Rice

Thanks alot Walt, sure, I want to try different options. As long as it works for our creator, it would be great.

Waiting for your instructions. Also, dose it make a difference which version of OpenLayersZoom?

Nancy

Hi,

In OpenLayersZoom, you should create the tiles for the selected images, either via the batch edit it items/browse or via the Zoom tab in items/edit. The process is slow (some minutes for an image bigger than 100 MB).

Could you use vips to create the tiles?

I have used that previously to create DZI tiles for a small plugin I wrote to display maps and the tile creation process is really quick.

All the best,

Anurag

Hi,

I'll check it when I find some time. Nevertheless, this is a command line tool, so it may not be always available.
Sincerely,

Hi Nancy,

Doesn't matter which version of OpenLayersZoom, although I use the most recent one.

Here's the item show template that has the Open SeaDragon viewer embedded:

If you are trying to make tiles for every image with a batch process, you can use the bulk_build_tiles.php script that is in the plugins/OpenLayersZoom folder. You would run this from the command line using the php command. And you have to edit the file first to indicate which collection you are processing, or modify the code so it processes all the images in your Omeka instance.

Peace,
Walt

Hi Walter,

Thanks for sharing with me this code.

I found in the Openseadragon page that if I include this Javascript in an html page I will be able to run the zoom function.
I wonder how is your code is different than this!
If I include the openseadragon js library in my item/show.php and then add the rest of the javascript to use the openseadragon function would it do the same job similar to you!
Thanks

<div id="openseadragon1" style="width: 800px; height: 600px;"></div>
<script src="/openseadragon/openseadragon.min.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
    var viewer = OpenSeadragon({
        id: "openseadragon1",
        prefixUrl: "/openseadragon/images/",
        tileSources: "/path/to/my/image.dzi"
    });
</script>

Nancy,

Open SeaDragon uses a different tiling system than the OpenLayers Zoom plugin produces. So much of that extra code simply translates so that the correct tiles are pulled.

The example you found relies on a single Deep Zoom Image (DZI) file, which we don't have.

Peace,
Walt
