I’ve always figured that was the appropriate size for one. I mean, if you can’t cut your parts directly out of a full sheet of plywood, what’s even the point?

We have actually talked about obtaining such a beast in the distant future, if square footage ever allows.

Someone asked this weekend if we had a 4x8-capable CNC router.  I had to point him towards Bench and/or MCC.

Sadly, as with all tools, it's an opportunity cost tradeoff... space vs frequency of use. Something like that would need to be used a whole lot to earn its keep...

I have thought recently about taking those components and building a portable/hand-held rig that could also potentially clamp to a workbench for bigger pieces.  But I don't have an immediate need so it's way down on the project list at the moment.

Please forgive my ignorance, but does MCC here refer to Metropolitan Community College? Do they have a publicly available makerspace / woodshop? Bench looks quite nice, but it also quite expensive.

Yes, MCC is Metro.  They have a Fab Lab, which is accessible to students.  And they have a non-credit community-school class that qualifies you, loosely, as a student.  However, if there was a need, I could probably work something out with the shop managers.  In fact, they have offered to give us a tour as an organized event sometime, if folks are interested.

UNL built computer tables, sofa, and chairs with the big CNC. The room holding the CNC was as big as our back shop.
