Last night we discussed building a string shooter as a booth display, and did a little prototyping.

It'll probably work well and be visually impressive, but I wonder if the simpler but somewhat bulkier hanging version would be more reliable for presentation purposes:

It looks like it would be a pretty simple build, and it can be placed very high as a way to draw attention.

David,

Any chance you could have something working for the Mini Maker Faire next weekend?

I agree. If you're around the space working on it tomorrow night, I'd help out.

Not to go wildly overboard or anything (no one in this group has ever been accused of that, have they???) but it would be awesome to add a second wheel that inputs waves to the string and then have that wheel move based on something else, say a song or based on a microphone so that visitors to the both just talk into a microphone and the string makes waves accordingly....

Yes, that would be awesome.  I'm sure David would welcome your input and assistance if you can come by Thursday night and lend a hand.  The challenge is, unfortunately, a short time frame before the event on the 15th.  All hands are welcome!

I can come in on Thursday and I have a fairly simple idea for how to implement that addition that is independent of the basic workings but I doubt I will be able to pull off putting it together by then...

Very good idea. I'm not sure the bandwidth of the string will allow for a reasonable representation of an audio waveform, but it would be interesting to try.

A simple implementation would be to strip the cone out of a woofer speaker driver (to minimize the audio output) and epoxy a rod to the center of the dustcap. The rod is linked via bailing wire (linear to arc motion relief) to the short end of a ~3:1 lever that touches the string. Connect standard audio amp and drive with music, microphone, keyboard (Makey Makey banana-based input?), etc.

A simple servo-tester driven servo would work as a minimal interface, but it takes more interfacing to hook up other kinds of inputs.

That would probably be a practical way to let kids interact with the thing in a controlled manner. With direct interaction someone is going to have to reset it frequently.

As Eric mentioned, the minimum viable product is the primary goal. Some kind of remote input would be a good stretch goal. Servo-tester with a knob people can reach is probably the fastest, if one is available.

Perhaps we need to use Monster Cable, instead of string, to get more bandwidth 😄

Another idea is to attach a motor and wheel to a rod that reciprocates back and forth with the rotation of the wheel. Attach the motor to a basic potentiometer. Let kids adjust the speed of the motor up and down with the pot.
