My dad sent me a forum link today that is dedicated to fidget toys
(worry stones, tops, etc.) that people carry around with them. Found a
few interesting items in there. Do you guys have this kind of stuff?

I have a pair of folding reading glasses that I got from Menard's.  The case is comparable to a worry stone, and the flip-open lid locks shut with a magnet.  I find myself spinning the case in my hand and flipping the top open and closed.  If it's not that, then I typically play with the extend/retract of a ballpoint pen, clicking it open and closed.  Or, if I'm carrying a multitool, I will tend to fidget with it.

I usually don't  fidget too much besides the occasional foot tapping but I was just thinking of making some of those hammered silver pieces for a way to use some scrap silver I have from casting, they look pretty cool, especially once they get a nice patina.

Yeah, some of those things were kinda like art.

When I first started reading the thread I was thinking to myself, "Hey,
I don't fidget...much!" Then I had a realization--pretty much every
time I have a pocket knife I'll open and close it for no reason and
generally screw around with it.

Kind of appropriate that the forum it was on also heavily centers around
pocketknives and other tools. Interesting social observation--I guess
people who like tools --> people who like to manipulate objects -->
people who 'fidget'. Should have guessed. :)

So you really got me thinking, Travis.

I fidget the most when I have long stretches of screen time - design, accounting, writing, etc. Unfortunately, I usually end up "fidgeting" with a bag of chips or something else from the vending machine. So I've been trying to figure out something to swap out for the junk.

One of the things that often pops up in searches for "fidget toys" is a pair of rings joined with chain links. I raised the parts closet at OMG over the weekend, along with some key rings from home.

The darker links move more smoothly, but I like the look of the chrome links. Guess I'll have one for work and one for home.

Twizzlers make it more difficult because of sticky fingers as well. I use water/diet soda bottles as my fidget toy instead of food. Dropped about 10 lbs. just by making that change and felt better because I was hydrated.

Those are cool! I've never actually seen that kind...I'm guessing the rings either move 90 degrees or they also tilt while rotating? It's early, my 3d modeling is not so great right now. :)

I ended up getting one of those spinners, the kind with 3 bearings all in a line. The vendor I bought from was on etsy, and the bulk of it was made via 3d printing. I've no doubt that it could be made in house of someone were inclined...it's a model, glue, and bearings. Main complaint? When you use the thing you get oil from the bearings on your hands. That and the response from coworkers when they see it is immediately either envy or condescending bewilderment.

I like this design. Thanks for sharing it.

Yeah, the rings tilt. The links move symmetrically to each other, and the whole thing feels very mechanical. It's a lot quieter than my previous pen- or eyeglass-case clicking.

I'll shoot a quick video when I get a chance.

Printed on this weekend. There are several models on Thingiverse. Used old skate bearings. The greased bearings have quite a bit of friction. I ordered a ceramic center bearing from eBay.

Nice!  Do you have a link for the bearings?  I might want to try one of these for myself.

Thanks,

This is the one I ordered for the center.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/361729342452

Most of the models available use standard 8x22x7mm bearings. Standard 608zz bearings are super cheap on eBay.

This one did not require glue, the bearings fit nice and snug.

Those ceramic bearings are cheap enough it probably doesn't matter, but you can also clean up steel bearings for a light load like this.  Pop the shields out, flush out the grease with solvent, and maybe give them a drop of light oil, and they'll spin very freely.

Here is one I designed on 123D and printed tonight.  I included the 123d body and STL files.  I did 50% infill with 1.5mm wall thickness and 0.2mm layers.

Those ceramic bearings are cheap enough it probably doesn't matter, but you can also clean up steel bearings for a light load like this.  Pop the shields out, flush out the grease with solvent, and maybe give them a drop of light oil, and they'll spin very freely.

This is the one I ordered for the center.

Most of the models available use standard 8x22x7mm bearings. Standard 608zz bearings are super cheap on eBay.

This one did not require glue, the bearings fit nice and snug.

Nice!  Do you have a link for the bearings?  I might want to try one of these for myself.

Printed on this weekend. There are several models on Thingiverse. Used old skate bearings. The greased bearings have quite a bit of friction. I ordered a ceramic center bearing from eBay.<IMG_0185.JPG>

Printed one(well 2, broke the first one) at the Makery tonight. It spins really well and looks great.
