I'm interested to hear what people who own a truck think about this.

Most of the people that I know that have trucks don't have a truck like that...

Pretty awesome, including the parts that are just innovative and not particularly "electric"

I appreciate the pass-through for long boards, if only because it starts to address the “we don’t have an engine so we don’t need a front compartment anymore” perspective. That’s been a point of discussion about what driverless cars might look like when you don’t need a steering wheel, a dash, or the requirement to face forward.

That being said, I own a truck because I want a cargo bed. This doesn’t have what I would consider a cargo bed. Like a “dump 2 cubic yards of mulch in the back” kind of cargo bed.

Now if Tesla toyed with an electric pickup.....

It would be a very nice unit to own but not for just any Joe.  Expect a six figure cost, especially if one goes with the 100kwh battery pack.  That said, if you have the money to burn, it would be a wonderfully quiet way to run around in the wilderness.  Jeep should be doing this but they are still in dinosaur mode.  (I'm biased though, having been driving EVs for almost five years now)  This thing would have four times the energy reserve than my Nissan LEAF does but will need it, having the aerodynamics of a brick, but at 15mph going on the rocks or bumpy fields, who cares. :-)  It even plugs in just like my LEAF does but won't charge at those snobby Tesla supercharger stations.  I know I'd love having a Bollinger unit, but Jeep is really missing the boat here.

Taking it outdoors might be great.  I’m wondering what happens when it transverse a rocky paths in ice Rocky Mountains.  I have an electric mower and electric snowblower and the motors have both stalled out for no apparent reason.
A friend in Colorado would drive us in their Jeep Rubicon and part of the fun was going on in even roads.

The inside resembles a Honda Element, with the exception of the front trunk space.   Those stadium seats in the back are novel, kids tend to like them because they can see over the driver, but adults tend avoid them because of how legs bend without the depth of a foot well.

Neat design, about time something like that hit the market.

I’m impressed by a lot of the individual features and tech, like the pass-through and hose-down interior, and the performance numbers look good. The controllable torque from electric motors would be excellent off-road. On the other hand, the portal axles and inboard brakes make it significantly worse on-road, and most of the fancy cargo configurations seem to expose the driver to the elements.

I’m also curious what the endurance is like in low range; fuel-powered vehicles suffer badly there but I imagine electric doesn’t take such a hit. Ultimately the truck is highly specialized for rough terrain, much of which is pretty far from a charger. Even if the range is still 200 miles off-road, I’m concerned that it might not be enough for the type of activities it was designed for.

Ultimately, I’m not sure exactly what the market for this is. It’s built like an original Humvee, but without the ability to refuel easily. I think this sort of design would work particularly well with a small range-extender engine to give it a bit more freedom. And putting this all-electric powertrain into a more conventional pickup truck, with normal live axles and a load bed, and a real interior, would be a lot more marketable.

Thinking again about what a vehicle design might look like if you didn't need an engine compartment, I'm drawn back to the old Volkswagon pickup truck, based on their van/bus platform.  That would be a slick EV!

I don't think it is reasonable to compare automotive grade electric drive systems to lawnmowers and snowblowers. :-)  The quality standards are orders of magnitudes away from each other.  Almost all of an EV is solid state with only minimal moving parts and that makes a difference in reliability.  I would expect the Bollinger product to have teething issues initially since it is a new auto maker with a new product but if they squish any bugs that will arise quickly, something wonderful could happen.  Well engineered fully mature EV models like the Tesla models and Nissan LEAF are rock-solid reliable, better than any dinosour-muck burning machine on the road.  The engineering options for excellence are just better for electric.

It would be interesting to see how many of their customers are "EV virgins" or more seasoned EV drivers.  I'd bet it will be mostly seasoned EV drivers because going from a regular gas car to EV car is fairly comfortable, Going from EV car to EV Jeep-like-unit is fairly comfortable too, but transitioning from regular car to EV Jeep-like-unit is a bigger leap than many would want to do without a lot of encouragement and information.   I don't expect the gas powered Jeep-like-unit to EV Jeep-like-unit transition to be rare since buyers of such gas units are already invested in an expensive unit and are unlikely to choose away from what they already invested in.  Still, if they could sell for good enough price.... :-)

It's going to be fun watching this product come together and I'm looking forward to my first sighting of one on the road a few years out. :-)

Its not all that similar, but the unit makes me think of the Jeep-like thing the Brigadier used to ride around in on the Old classic Doctor Who episodes.  (Back in the Jon Pertwee days. :-) )  consequently, I'm fond of the boxy style. :-)  Yes, I know I am dating myself. :-)

Lots of great ideas on features they could implement, but I see them adding such things later, after the initial product introduction.  Right now they need to get one excellent product out there and make it work right, then they can diversify and, no doubt, they will. :-)

Yea, I agree, for me that 30 mile run to Menards to pick up a sheet of plyboard with this thing would be a cold trip. :-)

Maybe they'll make a nice trailer-based camper/generator/fuel tank that you can load up for long trips. You could disconnect it and leave it at your camp site before hitting the trail :)

Don't hold your breath waiting for a decent VW EV of any flavor soon.  They are WAY behind the curve with EV production and have made a long track record of releasing concept vehicles that never get beyond vaporware status.  Remember, this is the company that put special code in its vehicles so they can cheat at emissions tests.  The only way they will go with anything green is kicking and screaming or running scared for fear of losing market share which is what they are doing now.

For instance, here is an article from 2011 with a really nice proposed vw microbus.  It was a sweet unit, but it was aborted before it even had a chance.  They never intended for it to live. (7 years ago)
https://www.wired.com/2011/02/vw-bulli-concept/

Another one: 2012 VW-E-Bugster - Way cool concept and a great add.  Lots of great sights and sounds but no steel and rubber. (also 7 years ago)
Pure S&M (Sales and Marketing), no E&M (Engineering & Manufacturing)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EURoNv2fess

There are many other EV VW products that have never went full gestation.  If they ever get to actually selling, it will be years behind their competitors and will probably be a half-(donkey synonym) effort with poor support.  Best to move on to other manufacturers.  VW just doesn't get EVs.
