So, as we all know, space is at a premium at the OMG (and everywhere, really). This article has a lot of ideas that we could implement at the space. Are there any particular ideas we should or shouldn't go for? I love the over-head tube storage idea. Same with the bins, possibly in the garage portion?

We don't tend to move the rolling scrap bin much and the items toward the back corner of it are hard to get to, it would be a good candidate for revision.

The tube idea is interesting (though perhaps not ideal with our ceiling style), but I think it would tend to conceal items. I prefer 'observable' storage for non-uniform (scrap) stuff. On a wall short up-down stacks of stuff are ok, but front-to-back is not, because you can't see the stuff in the back. Opposite for overhead.

A combination of overhead hooks for long stuff (keeps stuff visible, out of the way, and spacing between hooks discourages storage of short items), and shallow shelves against a wall for shorter items (visible, out of the way, and solid bottom encourages use for short items) might give us better use of floor space, and better access to see and access the materials. Also it would be fun to watch short people trying to get to the ceiling storage.

You make a good point about shorter members. We're not all 6' plus... I forget that sometimes.

For what it's worth, I'm totally in favor of any storage method which provides opportunity to make fun of short people...

Also, we've got step stools.

I think the "lockers" area could be replaced with file cabinets, maybe a little less space per person, but would be denser and allow for more people. 3 or 4 cabinets might fit in the same space with room for shelves above.

I have a 4 drawer cabinet at home I can donate. They also show up on CL for $20 or less sometimes, or on publicsurpus.com from Metro CC.

The existing bins may serve a purpose in the back. Also it's an older post but someone had a bunch of those bins on CL a month ago.  http://omaha.craigslist.org/tls/5704189916.html

Dan - we've talked in the past about replacing the bins, and I do think it's something we should pursue.  I'm not sure a file cabinet makes sense, though; a lot of people like to pick their box up and take it to a bench to work.  We've discussed using cardboard banker's boxes in a custom-built shelf, which should improve the density quite a bit.  It would also make it easy to get more boxes for new members.

This seems imminently doable on our existing bench. We have a good amount of empty space that is not well utilized at the moment.

We could definitely improve the storage below the main bench, but we've already got blank space on the pegboard above it - would more pegboard improve the situation any?  The area under the bench is mostly storage for bulky items.  Wouldn't conventional drawers be more useful?

Well, with drawers, you have to move people further out of the way. These are much slimmer, and might now be such a nuisance (assuming you know which one you need). Being in the middle, I feel like there's a lot of traffic and less disruption would be ideal. It also depends on what's to be stored. Let's take a peek tonight?
