I watched this live, and watching the two boosters land simultaneously was everything my boy-hood vision of "living in the future" would look like!  And the view of Starman driving through the stars is just epic!

I'll second that. Two boosters coming back like that was a serious 'this is the future I was promised' moment.

Really looking forward to BFS test flights.

In an article they quoted 90 million as the cost per launch for the heavy. Mars is definitely in our future.

No, the center core is specially built for the job. It's similar, but there are a lot of modifications.

In the interview afterward Musk said that if he'd had to pick one, the center is the one he'd pick to lose because the other two have fancy new titanium grid fins that are very expensive to make.

This wasn't expensive at all. They had to do a test launch anyway, usually they use a concrete block as a mass simulator. This only added a little bit to the cost of the launch maybe an extra million to get the stream working and such prepping the car on the second stage, etc.

It just goes to show just how important the soundtrack is when recording an event like this.  If you can't FEEL the rocket launch or the sonic booms, you haven't been there or experienced it properly. :-)  Great video.  "Smarter Every Day" is a great Youtube channel to subscribe to.

Its funny how much people spend on TVs for great video and then go cheap and don't get powerful realistic audio.  My audio system is much more valuable than the video system even though both are impressive, but my amps and speakers were bought decades ago and still sound great while they have seen tvs, laserdiscs, vcrs, dvds, recievers, computers and projectors come and go.  Good sound is a good investment.  I got good results with Onkyo M-504 power amplifiers.  They are class-A and have a signal to noise level so high that it is justifiable to have no volume control on them at all.  Tiny sounds come through small and clear while huge rocket launches blast away louder than you may want it.  Comparitively, the speakers are pretty cheap, Radio Shack Minimus 7's (Lots of them) and Multiple 12" car subwoofers. Together they all do the job and last well.  ...get more milage from a cheap pair of speakers....its still rock and roll to me...:-)  (But don't go with whimpy amps.  I've seen many more speakers destroyed by overdriven weak amps clipping than overdriven speakers from powerful amps)

I saw a shuttle launch years ago and remember the earth-shaking rumbles.

I actually had it lined up for one of the last shuttle launches to be on top of the near-side security building for the launch.  It's the closest that people are allowed to be to the pad, and is closer than about half the distance of the VAB from the pad.  The launch got scrubbed and re-scheduled, and I was not able to make it.  I can't imagine the photos I would have gotten.
