Hey everyone,

Ladies Learning Code is looking for some mentors for an Introduction to Ruby Workshop that they're putting on this Sunday, November 8th, from 10am to 4pm. It will be held at Shopify.

It'll a fun time.

You get to meet with and mentor some interesting people, break bread together with a catered lunch, and likely crack a few jokes throughout the day... because, why not, amiright? :)

What would I do there?

Okay, here's the deal...

You'll sit at a table with three to four people who are learning some basic Ruby. This may be their first time programming ever, or their maybe just their first time using Ruby.

The instructor will explain some concepts on stage, and every so often, they'll give a hands-on task for everyone to do.

Sometimes, while working on their tasks, the people at your table will have questions. They'll either ask you a question, or you may happen to notice that they seem stuck on something.

This is where your ninja-mentoring skills come in...

Your job is to gently guide them through their tasks, explaining and clarifying concepts as needed.

If appropriate, you can also drop some best practice knowledge on them.

What skill level do I need to have to mentor?

You seriously don't need to be super advanced in Ruby to be able to mentor, you just need to be a bit ahead of the people there.

In this case, since this is an Introduction to Ruby Workshop, you'd need to be a bit beyond the "brand new to Ruby" level.

Sweet, where can I sign up as a mentor?

You can register here:

One of the tickets you can "order" is a Mentor ticket. It's free, naturally, but that's how you get registered as a mentor.

..Are you still here?? Why aren't you registering??? :P

Joking, joking... ;)

It really is a fun time though. If you've never mentored before, I encourage you to give it a try. :)

Thanks all,
The Ottawa Ruby Team
