This is the new Google Group for Occupy Burners, a global network to
use the many skills which Burning Man community members have in aid of
the Occupy/OWS movement.

Please feel free to jump in with your introductions! Tell us where you
are from and your experience and skillset.

As for myself, I am Kit O'Connell, the creator/editor of Occupy
Burners. I am a gonzo journalist, writer, editor, social media junkie,
and long time Burner. I have been attending Burning Flipside in
Austin, Texas for 11 years where I am returning for my second year as
the event's Content Lead. I have attended That Thing In the Desert
twice and hope to return in 2012 -- unless I decide to spend all my
money on going to the July 4 Global General Assembly!

Hi all, I guess I'll jump in here and introduce myself as well in
order to keep all the intros in one place.

I'm Taylor Bolinger, or Dr. Mumbles if you prefer. I'm a blogger,
gonzo journalist, professor, linguist, and translator. I'm one half of
the Burning Flipside website's North Texas Content Team, I'm working
on a novel and blogging about the process in my limited free time, and
I'm in the early stages of an interactive online translation of a
sacred Aztec calendrical codex. I'm a relatively new Burner, having
been to Flipside once, and out to BRC once as well (I'm going again in
2012).

My Twitter is @MPrometheus and the blog about my novel is at
www.firefromthegods.blogspot.com

Hey all -- this is still Kit O'Connell. Just switching over to use
this email address for the group (and all Occupy Burners
communications).

Thanks Mumbles for getting our introductions going. Please everyone
join in if you feel comfortable doing so. We will begin brainstorming
in earnest here early next week.

As Mumbles says, he was my North Texas Writer for the Burning Flipside
Content Team, forming my NTX team along with photographer Matt Black.
Although the motto of the Content Team is "Gonzo for Flipside,"
Mumbles' writing most embodied the Gonzo Journalist spirit. As a
result, his writing was some of the most popular and the most
controversial.

We'll be launching our website in a few days, at which time we'll be
looking for contributions from anyone interested in writing, including
Mumbles.

Looking forward to hearing from the rest of you!

Cheers,
Kit

Hello All

I'm Sarah, a Bay Area resident, Burner, and one of the 99%.
I currently work two tech jobs to pay off my student loans and soaring
healthcare costs.
I'm young, experienced, and have a college degree but have been
unemployed or
working random contract jobs since 2008 when the market crashed.

I started going to That Thing In The Desert in 2005 and fell deeply in
love with the community,
the people, and the energy that surrounds Burning Man. I believe that
the climate and ethos of this community
is perfectly suited to being a support mechanism for the Occupy
Movement. We have the tools, the knowledge, and the experience to
build sustainable community encampments, to care for and educate all
those in our community, and to foster the creativity that gives this
movement its voice.

When the Occupy Movement began I was supportive but skeptical. Since
then I've spent time with OccupySF and OccupyOakland, marched in the
streets and stood in front of trucks as we shut down the port on Nov.
2nd. I'm becoming increasingly dedicated to the movement and motivated
to
contribute in anyway I can.

The people united will never be defeated!

hey fellow burners,

I'm Yas.  I live in SF.   I've been participating with #OccupySF for over a month now.    My skill set is around information architecture/programming/CMS.

My overly optimistic quote as police helicopters were circling my tent @occupy oakland,  "if I can  sleep on the playa, I can  sleep at Occupy!!"

It's awesome to meet you all!  And I've always wanted to check out Flipside!

Sarah:

Thanks for joining. Its fun to know who is behind Occupy_Narnia. I am looking forward to your writerly contributions as well as the rest of your skills. Your input has been valuable already. What kind of tech work do you do?

BTW, I quoted some of your email on our Facebook page. It sounds like you have had some exciting experiences already and I look forward to you sharing them.

To All: I hope everyone will submit their photos and video as well. I can start sharing it right away on our Twitter and Facebook.

Cheers,
Kit

Hey Yas,

Thanks for joining. And thanks for being out there. Do you have experienced with Wordpress? I have run a WP blog for some time but could use an experienced back-end person who could tinker with things if we needed.

And definitely share any good photos and video you have of your time in the occupation (or write about your experiences when we have the blog up too).

Cheers,
Kit

Hey Kit,

funny that you ask. I *just* learned wordpress last week, i'm on the webteam, we're rolling out  brand new occupysf.org website built on wordpress with suffusion... we haven't launched yet...  but it's in the works.

I know php, so I can write custom templates and all that geeky wp stuff if you want custom functionality.    and even better, i have access to burners occupy geeks who know *way* more than me about wordpress.

speaking of which, our osf web team is meeting tomorrow so I'll let everybody there know about this list.

peace,

yas

I'm Heidi, or flamingsword on the internet, and mostly I spit out
ideas: good, bad, random, and occasionally brilliant.

I have been to one burn, Flipside 20X, and will probably not return
until current health issues are sorted out. I am a junior member of
the media team of Occupy Dallas, a position I got by walking up to a
tent and saying. "I blog, how can I help?" I work weekdays as a
massage therapist, but drop off food and signs and attend marches with
the Occupiers for a few hours because that's what I can do on the
ground. On the internet, my true home, I blog, reblog, reshare, signal
boost, and talk to people who have not yet had the chance to hear
about Occupy from a rational, non-media source. If you think that
means that I spend a lot of time arguing policy with people on the
internet and having to police my cultural indoctrination towards
escalation, you are sadly correct. But it's good learning experience,
and since I've been in the polyamorous community for 10 years now I'm
bringing a lot of emotional tools to the table.

I do bead weaving and simple jewelry making on the side. It helps me
think about structures and interconnectivity.

Maybe we should have working people pitch tents on the lawns of their
homes. Not to sleep in, really just as a statement of support.

Write a letter to camping supply companies about a public word of
support?

If you had tents that all open around a central court, could you wrap
a long series of tarps around the outside to create a C shaped
structure facing the lee of the wind to trap warmth and disperse the
full effect of the wind around the structure? Would it get too muddy
in the central part with all the foot traffic?

We need to get more police speaking up on the need for a more
respectful and less militarized Force. I will need to interview a few
to get perspective, anybody got a friend on the force I can talk to?

Sounds great. Thanks for spreading the word about us. I am working on the OccupyBurners.org website right now and for now I don't think we need anything crazycustom, but if you want to write us a theme we should chat. Definitely, everyone let us know what you'd like to see on the site!

Heidi: Thanks for joining. Your comments on my '3 Reasons' BM-OWS post were so cogent and well thought out. It'd good to have your mind as a member of our new collective.

I'm zonk. I've been doing this burning thing for 10 years now. I've
been to Flipside 10 times and burning man 3.

When I first heard about Occupy I did my research and then went all
in. I have a full time job and a wife so i cannot really be on the
front lines but I have been a source of information for my friends and
family. I immediately saw why the Occupation tactic would not be able
to be sustained because these people had obviously never run a theme
camp. I have marched with Occupy Austin and attended several GAs. I
am actively participation in online live streams and conversations.
My main skills are music, research and information. I am good with
networking and computers as well. I can find information hidden on
the darknets and follow many streams of anonymous communications. I
look forward to seeing what type of information and strategy emerges
from all of this.

hey all-

i'm christina - bay area burner, worker, crafter, organizer. lovely to meet you all!

i've been involved in various BMan communities for a few years now. i volunteer@ and participate in that thing in the desert, and also locally.

i occupy oakland (and have been as active as i can be with occupysf and occupycal - balancing all of this with work has been a bit, uh, challenging). i'm also working with a women's caucus to ensure that issues that directly impact women, especially women of color, are at the center of this movement. since i have connections to the legal community in sf, i'm also helping to connect people/groups who wish to have legal perspective on their direct actions with attorneys who can answer their questions. at the moment, that means working with affinity groups who are interested in exploring the ideas of occupying foreclosed/foreclosing homes and buildings.

Thanks for joining us, Zonk & Christina. It's great to have you both on board. I think we have some great plans ahead. The two ideas which have been floated so far are the following:

--A winter clothes & gear drive operated by Burners.
--Encouraging Rangers & other Burners to facilitate peacekeeping/mediation classes at their local Occupations.

We will discuss both more formally when we finish our discussion of our self definitions.

Greetings everybody!

It is curious to me that as I was thinking about how to connect ows to burningman this would manifest itself to me (or me to this?)

My name is Aaron Sanders and I live with my wife in San Francisco. I'm part geek, part snowboarder, part facilitator, part burner, part crazy, part serious and very excited by this movement. What can I do to help?
