Dear Utah Python,

Guru Labs will be hosting a Developer Workshop on Thursday, July 30 at 3:00 pm.

Title: Elasticsearch, Solr, Lucene... what's the difference?
Presenter: Christopher Tate, Senior Software Engineer, Guru Labs

Description: Integrating a search engine with existing data can add powerful capabilities to your applications. The benefits include the obvious (search), in addition to other overlooked advantages, such as the ability to perform real-time analytics and aggregate disparate sources into a cohesive body. The Open Source search landscape is dominated by two main players, Solr and Elasticsearch. Both are mature and backed by powerful communities, so how do you go about choosing a search engine to incorporate into your software?

This presentation will introduce both search engines. Guru Labs senior engineer, Christopher Tate,  will be demonstrating the setup of Elasticsearch and Solr. He will show how they work under the hood with Lucene, demonstrate the addition of schema and schemaless data, show the difference in individual and bulk updates, profile their performance against each other and that of a SQL database, and talk about the differences between the two. Finally, he will provide architectural guidance as to when you might want to use one database engine over the other.
