Disclaimer
----------

The information is this list is intended to be as accurate as possible
based on information provided by sources. We cannot gaurentee its
accuracy. If you have information that can update missing fields (marked
by a ?) please feel free to provide it, we welcome contributions.

The use of trademarked names (such as IBM, Amiga, Atari) without their
trademark status included is not a challenge to that status, and should
not be construed as such. It is purely for informational purposes.

Thanks go to Pat Cain (Sideways BBS) for his Wellington BBS List.
Thanks go to Craig Shore (The Trashcan BBS) for his Christchurch BBS List
and the update details of the South Island. Also thanks to Daniel Ayers
for keeping me informed.
Thanks go to Dawghaus BBS for the Palmerston North BBS list.

Notes about fields
------------------

For each region, the following keywords are explained:

Region: This is the region, all BBS's within that area are toll
free to people calling that area. They are in alphabetical
order.

Calling-Prefix: The Telecom prefix needed to call this region from
outside the toll free calling area. It may be the same
for a number of different regions, but calling different
regions remains a toll call, and requires the prefix.

Comments: These are comments about various regions. The information
provided is mainly about networks within the regions.

Additions: New systems added since the last list
Deletions: Systems previously on the list but have closed down.
Updates: Systems which have changed in some way.

For each BBS within a region, the following keywords are explained:-

Name: The name of the BBS, followed by Sysop(s) in brackets. If
the BBS is prefixed by a The, then the The will be in
brackets at the beginning of the name.

Lines(s): There are different methods of accessing certain systems,
typically phone, and packet switched network (x25 or ax25,
phone or radio). The most typical access method is phone and
so these are listed first, followed by x25, and then ax25,
and then any other method.

for a phone it would be
Phone Number / Hours (Baud Rates + Error Correction facilities)
Possible Description

Baud rates and error correction keywords are:

Name Baud Rate
Bell 300 300 BPS using BELL tones (US only)
V21 300 BPS
V22 1200 BPS
V22bis 2400 BPS, 1200 Baud (supports 2400 and 1200 connects)
V23 1200/75 BPS
V32 9600 BPS
-V32bis 12000 BPS (Step back rate from V32bis)
V32bis 14400 BPS
HST US Robotics 19.2K or 38.4K modem
CSP CompuCom's HST equivalent
V42 CCITT Error correction
V42bis CCITT Data Compression
MNP5 Similar to V42
ZyXEL 16800 ZyXEL transmission protocol (ZyXEL modems only)

Others are:
IP - Internet Protocol, Only those directly on the internet
PACNET - Telecom's X25 service
PACKET RADIO - Amateur Radio AX25

[DOWN] after a Lines(s): line means the system is down temporarily
for some reason.

Stepping means that you only need to ring one line (that noted
as stepping) and the phones will 'step' to the next one if
the previous one is engaged.

Networks: These are networks that these systems are known to belong to.

If you wish to join any of these, it is best to call one
of the local nodes that also belong. Most are fully open
to new members. At the beginning of each region, there is
a description of known network contacts.

When a network is listed with a question mark next to it, it
means that the system in question is on that network, but their
address is unknown.

IFNA = International Fidonet Association. Approximatly 13000
BBS's worldwide. Governed by POLICY4, and ECHOPOL, and
local administrators rules/rulings. New Zealand representative
is Tony Hall of Tony's BBS in Christchurch. Each major city
has its own co-ordinator in charge of issuing new node numbers.
The IFNA is responsible for the K12 Education Network.

Demi-monde = New Zealand's alternative to IFNA, governed
by POLICY.ZIP (freq from 199:320/1.0). New Zealand representative
(ZC) is Mark Brandwood of NightOwl (Auckland). Currently works with
both UUCP and Fidonet style systems. This now incorporates the
ASD echos available from The Nuthouse (199:340/1).
Note also, all Demi-monde systems are accessable by EMAIL via
Usenet (user@fNODE#.nNET#.z199.fido.nacjack.gen.nz, e.g
Richard Vowles 199:310/1.0 would be
Richard...@f1.n310.z199.fido.nacjack.gen.nz)

Usenet = The Users Network, actually connects businesses,
universities, and many other private and public organisations
around the world. Carries approx 1800 newsgroups in New Zealand.

OasisNet = An 8-bit Atari based network. There is only one
system currently operating in New Zealand - Simplicity BBS
(Christchurch).

SLnet = SearchLight Network, it is a network of SearchLight
BBS systems that uses the same framework as the IFNA to run.
Primary difference is that it supports all of the message
control information (such as colour) that can be stored in
a message from a SearchLight BBS.

LOCNET = a network local to Hamilton

Family Net = An alternative Fidonet technology network which in
New Zealand and Australia carries a number of Christian Echos.
Access to the network is through an application to join the
United Christians Communications Network. The New Zealand
Co-ordinator is Errol Thompson of Christian Ministry BBS. All
applicants are expected to be members of Fidonet in New Zealand.

SnotNet = Sparkling Network of Orgasmic Thought

System: Machine/Operating System followed by information about the
machine itself (clock rating, hard drive space, processor),
followed by the software that the BBS runs under. (If Known)

Audience: The audience that the BBS is looking for.

Additional: Additional information about the BBS. If it is not otherwise
mentioned, there are no fees associated with belonging to
the system. Sensationalism is strictly avoided.

Fee: This is the cost per annum (unless otherwise stated) of using
this BBS per year. Many have schemes of increased access for
more money.

Handles: Whether alias names can be used on this BBS.

Offline: Whether the system has facilities for offline readers, and
if so, what type.
