The Reality-TV Presidency

Jonah Goldberg

Dear Reader (especially those of you with fetish for interspecies romance),

I used to love crossovers.

A “crossover” is what you call it when a character or characters from one story shows up in another. Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein was a personal favorite of mine as a kid. By the time I stopped collecting comic books, however, crossovers had gotten a bit ridiculous. They’d cut across the Marvel Universe like a four-year-old on a runaway John Deere, going straight through the hedges. A story would start in an X-Men title, get picked up in a Spider-Man title, then go careening into a limited series of Wolverine, before finally concluding in some new comic they were trying to promote such as Forensic Accountant Lad.

Movies and TV shows use crossovers to expand the pie of viewers. If you’re an ardent fan of one show, you’re likely to watch another show if your favorite characters show up in it. Hence such classics as Steve Urkel from Family...

A Source Familiar with White House Thinking: ‘Mueller Is Moving Quickly’

Jim Geraghty

How serious is the White House about defending itself from allegations of impropriety in the election and in any contact with the Russian government? “Someone familiar with internal White House thinking” reached out to me. Sadly, I cannot describe this carbon-based life-form in the Washington, D.C., area more specifically than that. Longtime readers know I’ve had days where I’ve defended President Trump and I’ve had days where I have criticized him intensely, but apparently, the White House and its allies are no longer talking only to media that is willing to march in lockstep in defending Trump.

This person said that the news from earlier this week about Mueller’s investigation now turning to obstruction of justice is not necessary terrible news. The Washington Post reported that “Daniel Coats, the current director of national intelligence, Mike Rogers, head of the National Security Agency, and Rogers’s recently departed deputy, Richard Ledgett, agreed to be interviewed by Mueller’s investigators as early as this week.”

This source says that the fact that the investigation is leaking is bad,...

What Washington's Talking About

The Bell Tolls for ‘Whom’

Is the word “whom” dead? [Spencer Jakab, Wall Street Journal]

The Libelous New York Times?

“The New York Times published its editorial in response to yesterday’s vicious, violent, and explicitly political attack on Congressional Republicans — an attack that wounded four and left Representative Steve Scalise in critical condition in a Washington-area hospital — and it is abhorrent. It is extraordinarily cruel, vicious, and — above all — dishonest. The editorial doesn’t just twist the truth to advance the board’s preferred narratives; it may even be libelous, a term I choose carefully. … The Times, however, seems desperate to discredit conventional, mainstream conservatism by tying it to the most heinous and violent acts. Thus, the editorial board peers into Omar Mateen’s jihadist mind and finds visions of Republican transgender bathroom bills. It rewrites the well-known history of the Tucson tragedy. Even when jihadists or progressives attack, it finds a way to slice and dice members of the GOP.” [David French, National Review]

Members of Congress showed unity on the baseball diamond, but away from the field, as they receive more and more death threats from the public, they’re worried about their security. I’m Davan Maharaj, editor-in-chief of the Los Angeles Times. Here are some story lines I don’t want you to miss today.

TOP STORIES

In a Divided Nation, the Perfect Game
The crowd cheered. Republicans and Democrats prayed for Rep. Steve Scalise, in critical condition after Thursday’s shooting. They took their turns at bat. For a few hours at least, America’s national pastime did what it does best — make people forget their troubles. Nancy Pelosi and Paul Ryan even did their first joint interview at the game. But outside the stadium, members of Congress are worried about the country’s polarized political environment. They say they’re receiving more death threats than ever before. And they want better security, particularly when they’re outside the Capitol.

More Politics
— Trump lashed out on Twitter about a report that special counsel Robert Mueller was taking steps toward investigating him for possible obstruction of justice.
— Vice President Mike Pence has hired an experienced criminal lawyer to respond to requests from the special counsel and congressional investigations.
— Trump visited with the nine Supreme Court justices just before a ceremony for Neil Gorsuch. Coincidentally, they’re weighing the fate of the president’s proposed temporary travel ban.

California Can Keep Its Smog Rules, for Now
California environmentalists are taking a deep breath after EPA chief Scott Pruitt said his agency is not currently looking to take away the state’s power to impose its own strict emission rules for cars and trucks. Earlier this year, Pruitt had suggested the Trump administration might try to weaken or revoke California’s authority. Yesterday, Pruitt praised the state for “leadership” on clean air. Despite all that, air quality officials are warning of “very unhealthy” smog levels as a heat wave envelops Southern California this weekend.

The Case of the Cadets and the Missing Police Cruisers
LAPD Chief Charlie Beck has ordered a “top-to-bottom” review of the department’s cadet program after three teenage cadets were arrested on suspicion of stealing police cruisers, then leading officers on car chases that ended in crashes. They may have also taken stun guns, radios and a bulletproof vest. Officials have long pointed with pride to the 18-week academy training program.

Video: Feeding a Hunger in Little Saigon
In Vietnam, Hue Phan was an accountant. In Garden Grove, the 55-year-old helps support her family by cooking on the backyard patio and selling the meals to those too busy to cook. Serving com thang, or “monthly rice” in Vietnamese, goes back generations in the old country. In neighborhoods like Little Saigon, it’s also a recipe for immigrants, mostly women, to scrape together a living.

He Has Lots of Drive but Not This $2.2-Million Ferrari
In some ways, David Lee is the ultimate Ferrari fan. He owns a garage full of them in the San Gabriel Valley, has visited the factory and attended the Ferrari driving school in Italy. He’s done everything he can think of to get on a secret list that would allow him to buy a LaFerrari Aperta, of which only 200 will be built. Ferrari turned him down. Why? Some say he’s trying too hard.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY

The 6th Street Viaduct in Los Angeles is mostly just a memory now, demolished to make way for a new bridge to replace the one that was crumbling because of a chemical process in the concrete. Back on this date in 1933, though, the mayor hailed it as a bridge to the future at the dedication ceremony, where “the police band played, flags fluttered and the crowds cheered.”

ONLY IN L.A.

Earlier this week, L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti mentioned a monorail might ease congestion along the 405 Freeway. Though it may sound like an episode of “The Simpsons,” this isn’t the first time L.A. officials have considered a monorail. In 1965, there was talk of building one between downtown and LAX. But one businessman had a different concept: a “flying bus.” Neither idea took off.

Tactical Advantage of Navy SEAL Teams

Dear Reader,

You’ve never heard of the man I am about to introduce, and there’s good reason for that.

He works in anonymity... yet with deadly precision.

As a former Navy SEAL sniper and platoon commander, Cade Courtley has spent much of his adult life in harm’s way.

So when he talks about self-defense, gear or survival tactics, you would be wise to listen.

CadePlay

And today Cade’s revealing a tool SEALs use regularly that could help you protect your home and your family.

It’s no secret U.S. Navy SEAL elite forces have major advantages over their targets. Superior training, state of the art weapons and advanced tactics all play a role.

But one critical advantage trumps them all. (You can watch Cade demonstrate it right here.

And today, Cade wants to give you the same advantage used by SEAL teams to keep you and your family safe in a crisis.

Click here to see the video and claim it for yourself.

Stay safe,

Doug Hill
Director, Laissez Faire Club

P.S. Click here to see how to claim a free gift from our resident Navy SEAL sniper.

Trump Won’t be Happy About this New Leaked Report…

A new set of government leaks just exposed what the CIA is really up to…

They’re monitoring us in more ways than we ever imagined.

Through your smartphone… your TV... even in your car.

But a controversial new report called ‘Wire Tapped America’ shows you how to become invisible.

Plus, it reveals dozens of places you should NEVER say anything you don’t want recorded and used against you later…

BEST PART: 2000 copies are being given out FREE to spread the word.

On pg. 30, you’ll learn 7 steps to hide you and your family’s dealings from Big Brother’s prying eyes, permanently.

Don’t say or do anything you wouldn’t want “them” to know about before you get this.

P.S. – the leaker says this is a one-time ‘privacy alert’ giveaway. Once these 2000 copies are gone (and many already are) this info won’t be available free again. Click here to reserve your free hardcopy.

Uber and the Free Market

“One question for capitalism is whether Uber’s shakeup would have occurred sooner if it had already braved public equity markets. Two decades ago startups went public much earlier in their business cycle. But Sarbanes-Oxley and other regulatory demands have made going public far more costly, and even successful tech startups tend to delay listing shares on exchanges. Public markets are sensitive to losses and bad publicity, so they can be as useful for disciplining managers as they are for rewarding investors. The only story the business press likes better than a glorious startup is an inglorious failure, so Mr. Kalanick is now getting a rough ride. But he’s built an innovative business that fulfills a public need, and Uber’s investors had better hope his replacement is as good a manager as Mr. Kalanick has been an entrepreneur.” [Editorial, Wall Street Journal]

“You gasp with each new report on Uber’s toxicity. … Yet if you’re like many people, in a day or two you’ll shrug, pull out your phone and call up an Uber anyway. You have a meeting across town and the car isn’t driving itself, at least not yet. Don’t do it — at least not without considering the full weight of your decision, and the many alternatives you might turn to instead. Try Lyft. Use a taxi, a bus or a train. Heck, hire a limo and a chauffeur with a golden top hat. To encourage a better Uber, it’s time to play the only card you’ve got: If it backslides or otherwise fails to live up to the promises it’s making now, stop using Uber.” [Farhad Manjoo, New York Times]

Preventive Medicine and the Curse of Common Sense
By Robert F. Graboyes

An important lesson for health care policy resides in an orthographically eccentric quote from the 19th-century humorist Josh Billings: “Wisdum don’t konsist in knowing more that iz new, but in knowing less that iz false.” Nowhere is this truer than in the commonly held, but mostly false, belief that more preventive care will reduce overall health care costs.

Say Goodbye to
Blood Sugar Worries
Dear First Name,

Could your blood sugar use some quick help?

Before you answer…consider this:

Doctors now realize that blood sugar is the #1 factor for good health and long life. Here's why ...

Out-of-control blood sugar is linked to every serious degenerative disease on the Top 10 Killers list.

It's a fact: Excess blood sugar harms every important organ in your body. And eating less sugar won't protect you because so many hidden sugars and sweeteners are being added to our foods today -- even the ones that aren't supposed to be "sweet."

They become blood sugar just as rapidly as if you ate pure table sugar!

The Dangers of High Blood Sugar
  • Too much blood sugar puts you at risk for serious diseases -- and accelerated aging.
  • Sugar is highly inflammatory and generates excessive free-radical activity.
  • Why is it harmful? This inflammation oxidizes ("burns") your cells and tissues, a major cause of aging and disease.
  • Controlling your blood sugar has never been more important your entire life.
  • And now it's easier than ever - thanks to a remarkable new discovery.
Keep reading to learn all about it...

Jeff Sessions did not recall quite a few things, but he called any claims he was involved in Russian attempts to influence the presidential election a “detestable lie.” I’m Davan Maharaj, editor-in-chief of the Los Angeles Times. Here are some story lines I don’t want you to miss today.

TOP STORIES

Jeff Sessions’ Less-Than-Total Recall
Atty. Gen. Jeff Sessions was adamant in “defending my honor against scurrilous and false allegations” and called any hint of collusion with Russia in the election “an appalling and detestable lie.” He was steadfast in refusing to describe his interactions with President Trump. And, when asked about meetings and conversations or other Trump campaign members, he was often hazy. “I don’t recall” was one phrase of the day. Did the nearly three hours of testimony, prefaced by a hug from Sessions’ wife, change any minds? Hard to say, but it did distract from Trump’s visit to Wisconsin to promote his economic record. Here are nine key moments, a look at his style in answering questions (or not), and a side-by-side comparison of Sessions’ and Comey’s accounts of events.

More Politics
— Trump called the House-passed healthcare bill “a great plan” at a Rose Garden ceremony last month; on Tuesday, congressional sources say, he told Republican senators it is “mean” and urged them to craft a version that is “more generous.”
— Deputy White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Trump “has the right” but “no intention” to fire special counsel Robert Mueller.
— Nevertheless, she persisted: Sen. Kamala Harris and Sessions faced off over his refusal to answer Senate questions. She got interrupted by Sen. John McCain, and Sessions got “nervous.”
— Times political analyst Cathleen Decker explains how the Sessions hearing gave an ambitious class of new senators from both parties a chance to stand out

North Korea Releases an American, and the Worm Returns
It’s a question for the ages: What’s going on in Pyongyang? Just as Defense Secretary James Mattis had labeled North Korea the “most urgent” threat to national security because of its nuclear weapons and missile tests, word came that imprisoned University of Virginia student Otto Warmbier was being flown home. His parents said they had learned just last week that their son has been in a coma for more than a year. And just as Warmbier was released, word came that Dennis “The Worm” Rodman was back in North Korea, fueling all kinds of speculation that the White House shot down.

Uber Vows to Stop Hustlin’
After years of being Silicon Valley’s bad boy, Uber says it’s trying to get on the straight and narrow. It’s unveiled 47 recommendations from an outside review (read it here) that it plans to implement, including eliminating its corporate value of “Always Be Hustlin’.” At the same time, Uber co-founder and CEO Travis Kalanick says he’s taking an indefinite leave of absence to grieve for his mother, killed in a recent boating accident, and to reflect on the company. Then, just when some folks might have thought about undeleting their Uber app, a board member made a joke about women at a companywide meeting addressing the harassment of women. That board member resigned.

Boycott (Your Ad Here)!
What do Breitbart, “Hannity,” “Julius Caesar” and Megyn Kelly have in common? They’ve all created media firestorms that have led to boycott calls against the advertisers who support them. Such boycotts aren’t new, but the speed at which they spread, fueled by social media and partisan feelings about Trump, is.

O.C. Snitch Scandal? Fake News, a Grand Jury Says
Orange County prosecutors and sheriff’s deputies have faced allegations of running a secret jailhouse informant program to obtain confessions from criminal defendants for years. After a months-long investigation, a grand jury says those accusations are a critic- and media-fueled “myth.” Meanwhile, federal and state investigations continue.

— Gov. Jerry Brown and lawmakers have unveiled a final state budget deal, finally deciding how to spend tobacco tax dollars and boost the bottom line of California’s largest public employee pension fund.

— Can a genuine, bona fide, electrified monorail over the 405 Freewayease the traffic? L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti thinks it might.

— Did you enjoy that cool June gloom earlier this week? Sweltering heat is coming soon, and it will increase the snowmelt along the Sierra Nevada.

HOLLYWOOD AND THE ARTS

— Megyn Kelly’s interview of Alex Jones raises the question: Should certain people be refused a platform?

— The L.A. Film Festival starts today, looking more and more to reflect the city in which it’s held.

— R&B singer-songwriter Tinashe has sparked a debate about discrimination based on skin color. “If you’re a black woman, you’re either Beyoncé or Rihanna,” she said.

— The Senate is about to ram through Trumpcare. This is not a drill; it’s an emergency.

It’s time for … Abraham Lincoln! Dodgers broadcasting legend Vin Scully is taking a couple of days off from retirement to narrate Aaron Copland’s “Lincoln Portrait,” which features the words of the 16th president, with music conducted by Gustavo Dudamel at the Hollywood Bowl. Quite the all-star lineup.

CLAIM Your Free 3-Day Survival Food Kit in the Next 24-Hours

In a crisis, your #1 need is food.

But not just any food...

Experts say everyone needs to have non-perishable, good for 25 years survival food on hand in case of an emergency.

Well right now – in what is truly an unprecedented move – 72-hour Food4Patriots survival food kits are being given away to loyal subscribers as long as they beat the program deadline and while supplies last.

"Survival food is more important today than ever before," explains Frank Bates, a spokesman for the company. "Natural disasters, terrorist attacks and other threats can make obtaining sufficient food impossible in an emergency."

"None of us wants to ever rely on this or any government to feed us in a crisis," Bates says.

Food4Patriots survival foods are made of the finest ingredients, grown and packaged right here in the USA. They taste great and provide the nutrition you need.

Recent advancements in the processing and packaging have led to this food being guaranteed fresh for an amazing 25 years. Packages are made of military-grade Mylar, the same material used to protect NASA astronauts.

Every 72-hour kit that's being given away contains 16 total servings of such delicious meals as Blue Ribbon Creamy Chicken Rice, the always-loved Granny's Home-style Potato Soup, and stick-to-your-ribs breakfast favorite Maple Grove Oatmeal.

This kit sells to the general public for $27.00 plus postage and has been rated 4.5 out of 5 stars by customers.

But those who act quickly can get them just for the shipping and handling fee.

"We're trying to ensure that no one who wants this free food misses out, but they have to hurry because we have a limited supply of the 72-hour kits we can give away," Bates warned. "Once word got out that folks could actually get free survival food, we had to add extra customer service staff to keep up with incredible demand."

There is still time to take advantage of this offer, but be aware that supplies are limited and the program may end at any time.

Urgent: Special situation involving the Social Security Administration

Dear Reader,

Warning…

What you’re about to see is not affiliated with the U.S. Social Security trust fund in any way…

Nor is it managed, subsidized or endorsed by the Social Security Administration or any other government agency.

It does not replace Social Security or affect your ability to collect it.

But if you act before July 20th....

You could get four deposits of $1,720 or more in 2017… for a total of $6,880.

That’s money from the private sector going straight into your account.

Imagine this…

You’re out walking your dog and a man sticks a gun in your face.

gun-robbery.jpeg

Do you cooperate? Fight? Or would you just freeze like most Americans… waiting for whatever fate a sick person has in mind for you?

99% of Americans are totally unprepared for violent crimes… even though it can be shockingly easy to throw a crook off and take control of the situation.

In fact, you can use the gun to break an attacker’s hand… while he’s still holding it.

An ex-CIA agent wants to show you this simple 2-second trick to protect yourself the right way every time… and that’s just the beginning.

Click here for his shockingly simple self-defense demonstration

-Lou Prep.

P.S. This 2-second trick is really effective and super simple to execute. It could save your life.

If you're planning on changing your financial situation for the better any time soon, then I suggest you watch this webinar

People are always looking for the instant fix as we like instant...

They spend their time looking again and again for the fast fix.

But as I've said plenty of times before...

They do not realize that the short cut is the long road in disguise, and the long road is the shortcut in disguise...

I made this mistake myself, and had to learn the hard way that the hardest thing about making money is simply hanging onto it.

This cost me millions to learn, and I really would like to help you avoid having to pay to learn it too.

But all I can do is point it out, you have to choose to look more carefully.

If you'd like to hang on to what you've already got.

If you'd like to grow it too.

Or if you'd just like to learn how to start thinking this way, then I recommend you don't miss the LAST CHANCE to access this webinar

People often say to me, how do you do it, how do you make so much? Frankly, though, it's not that I make so much, it's that I have learned how to hang on to what I make -- and make lots more of it.

You can learn that here for yourself, if you think you can.

Dear Reader,

This is the most incredible map you will ever see...

(Click Play for the Full Story)
It reveals a huge untapped energy reserve that spans the entire United States.

Experts at the U.S. Department of Energy believe this fuel could provide America with a "30,000-year energy supply."

Goldman Sachs says this is a "power that's virtually inexhaustible."

And the Los Angeles Times says this massive ocean of energy "may be the most prolific renewable fuel source that most people have never heard of."

And there's a relatively unknown Midwestern company with the technology that's key to harnessing this INFINITE energy that's buried beneath ALL 50 states.

As our in-house tech expert told me, "This could be bigger than ExxonMobil, Chevron and Shell Oil combined … and make investors John D. Rockefeller-type fortunes. Early investors will have the chance to mint millions."

Details here...

Dear Reader,

Did you know that some Americans are getting as much as $6,235 deposited directly into their accounts…

Even though they're not old enough to collect on Social Security benefits?

It's all thanks to a little-known contract involving the Social Security Administration.

And don't worry…

Because these deposits come from the private sector, they don't affect your ability to collect on Social Security.

Click here to see how you can get your name on the list of recipients.

But hurry…

By law, you must act before October 19th in order to get your first deposit.

Don't waste any time. There's a lot of money involved.

Last year alone, $122 million was paid out.

Click here to see how you can claim your piece of the pie.

Welcome to the Kelly Era

Jim Geraghty

It’s the last day of July, and the first day of the rest of new White House chief of staff John Kelly’s life. Good luck, sir. If you succeed, I’m sure John Cena will play you in a wacky comedy version of the hard-nosed military disciplinarian who’s brought in to coach a wacky band of White House misfits.

Some conservatives I respect have convinced themselves that Reince Priebus was the key problem in the Trump White House all along. They’ve suspected he was a leaker, or wondered why he never looked bad in the information that leaks out from the White House. They saw him as “establishment.” They perceived him as disloyal, although it’s hard to point to when or where Priebus acted disloyally to Trump.

Priebus certainly couldn’t keep the “Team of Mortal Enemies Rivals” from fighting amongst themselves, but who could? How much do you think the worldview of Steve Bannon overlaps with that of Jared Kushner? How much do you think Ivanka Trump and Mike Pence really agree on? How much does the economic perspective of Gary Cohn and Stephen Miller overlap? How much does Anthony Scaramucci get along with anyone except the president? Everyone wants to be the last ...

Did Jesus Christ Develop a Cancer Cure 2,000+ Years Ago?
Dear Reader,

According to a growing number of scientists and religious scholars... Jesus Christ used a special kind of "Holy Oil" that actually kills cancer cells.

Even better, folks in the religious community believe they've uncoveredthe ancient formula he left behind.

And after 2,000+ years, this medicine is once-again performing medical miracles all across the country.

Hundreds… perhaps even thousands of "miraculous healing" stories have begun surfacing across America.

According to one such story, a famous Hollywood stuntman claims the "Jesus Oil" helped rid his body of stave IV colon cancer.

After ingesting the ancient medicine he explained:
"I saw God… I saw the white light… I woke up and felt the cancer was gone from my body."

At his next checkup, doctors confirmed via a CAT scan that his cancer had indeed "vanished."

There was nothing left but scar tissue!

If you – or a loved one – has cancer, you need to watch this video that explains everything…

Sincerely,

Susan White

What Washington's Talking About

The Cost of Climate Change

“Climate change is often misunderstood as a package deal: If global warming is ‘real,’ both sides of the debate seem to assume, the climate lobby’s policy agenda follows inexorably. It does not. … To arrive at a wise policy response, we first need to consider how much economic damage climate change will do. Current models struggle to come up with economic costs consummate with apocalyptic political rhetoric. Typical costs are well below 10% of gross domestic product in the year 2100 and beyond. That’s a lot of money—but it’s a lot of years, too. Even 10% less GDP in 100 years corresponds to 0.1 percentage point less annual GDP growth. Climate change therefore does not justify policies that cost more than 0.1 percentage point of growth.” [David R. Henderson and John H. Cochrane, Wall Street Journal]

When all else fails, President Trump plays to his base. I’m Davan Maharaj, editor-in-chief of the Los Angeles Times. Here are some story lines I don’t want you to miss today.

TOP STORIES

For Trump, It’s All About That Base
Another ICBM test by North Korea. A diplomatic spat with Russia, in response to the latest sanctions passed by Congress. A continuing battle over Obamacare, now centered on whether the White House will try to block critical funding. President Trump has a new chief of staff in John Kelly, but for a West Wing that’s been in turmoil, the business of the country marches on. Increasingly, Trump has been playing to his base, even as he faces more open signs of pushback from Republican lawmakers. Here’s a breakdown of the White House’s revolving door.

More Politics
— Sen. Lisa Murkowski walked a tightrope in Alaska when she voted “no” on the Obamacare repeal.
— “It’s not what policing is about today”: LAPD officials react to Trump’s comments about police being “rough” with people they arrest.
— No joke: Kid Rock is a competitive candidate for the U.S. Senate in Michigan.
— What do booty shorts, classical music and whiskey have in common? President Trump’s “great again” slogan.

At USC Med School, the Red Flags Were There
Five years ago, USC President C.L. Max Nikias kept Dr. Carmen Puliafito on as medical school dean at a salary of more than $1 million a year. Puliafito had a track record of bringing in star researchers, raising hundreds of millions of dollars and increasing the school’s national ranking. But faculty and staff had complained about Puliafito, saying he had a bad temper, humiliated colleagues in public and had a perceived drinking problem. Still, he was rehired. And as The Times has reported, he partied with a circle of addicts, prostitutes and other criminals who said he used drugs with them, including on campus.

Why Saudi Women Sometimes Run and Hide
In Saudi Arabia, women must get permission from a male guardian to get a job, receive medical care, travel abroad or marry — the list goes on. That means they’re beholden to a father, husband or in some cases even a son, even if they’re abused by them. As Times foreign correspondent Molly Hennessy-Fiske reports from Riyadh, for some that means fleeing home, which puts them at risk of being jailed. For one woman, it means keeping a secret apartment for her cats.

Meet the Refugees Who Pack Your Chicken
The work is not for the faint of heart: gutting birds on the “killing line” at a poultry plant or picking up big boxes and feeding them into a cleaning machine. For the many refugees who have turned to the meatpacking industry in places like California’s Central Valley, though, it’s a chance to build a better life — away from the bloodshed in the Middle East and elsewhere. “It’s the biggest opportunity all the foreign people have here,” says one man from Iran who left recently Foster Farms to study for his electrician’s license.

Video: There’s Gold in Them Thar Hills!
It’s not exactly a repeat of the Gold Rush, but the record-setting rain and snowfall during winter did more than bring us a super-bloom of wildflowers and skiing in July. All that water rushing through the mountains has carried rock and gravel down streams that were once dry along California’s Mother Lode. And that’s put a new kick in the step of prospectors panning for gold.

Hunting for gold

No-Drama … Chiang
Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and former L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa may be two of the most charismatic politicians running for California governor next year, but state Treasurer and fellow Democrat John Chiang is working on his own brand: engaged but reserved, a bit defiant and “Torrance stylish.” He’s hoping that with all the political drama in the White House, Californians will be ready for a no-drama approach. This is the latest in our series about the candidates running to succeed Jerry Brown.
