We have a large contingent of Raspberry Pi Foundation staffers coming to Maker Faire New York at the end of September and we are interested in meeting with people who are doing interesting things with Raspberry Pi (whether or not you're exhibiting at Maker Faire). If you have something going on, please email me off-list: ma...@raspberrypi.org.

And of course, that's also a standing offer. If you're ever doing cool stuff with Raspberry Pi, please get in touch. We have a lot of media channels for telling stories about what's going on in our community, whether it's related to education, industrial, hobby, etc.

Thanks,
Matt

I was curious about opinions on the NYC Maker Faire.
I attended the years of 2012, 13 and 14 (as a exhibitor).

I was told that last year, there was no Maker Shed selling kits, parts, etc.  It seems that the focus has been shifting to make the faire more kid and family friendly, which has its merits, however, there is now much less catering to the technical engineer, hacker, hobbiest crowd.

Do others agree?

The bay area maker faire always seemed to me to be a kids version of burning man... with the added goal of selling make merchandise.

The exhibitors were welcomed, but as the maker store expanded they began to become less of a store situation and more of a show off stuff situation.

I think NYC has had a hard time bringing in exhibitors as there's just less of a market here.  Or perceived less of a market here.  Or maybe just cost of sending people to NYC.  I've heard that union labor for events in NYC is god awful expensive.  I've heard horror stories about startups tanking because they tried to exhibit at javits.

I've been to the NYC event in 2010, '11, '12, '13, '14, '15, '16. I'm not going this year.

The first year or so it looked like Burning Man Lite. It got more kid-friendly and in general targeted a broader audience in the next few years. I appreciated that, I have kids, even if it meant less Rocket Ponies or fire-shooting carousels.

But lately it's been wall-to-wall merch. Fewer giant art exhibits, less DIY, less unique experiences. Lots more vendors. And even the DIY is more show-and-tell and less hands-on. Much of the rest is either exhibits or demos of kits you can buy.

I liked it, it's nice to meet some artists and makers. But I'm done with scheduling my Sunday and paying admission for what's become a giant store.

It's a pity, I haven't found anything local to replace it.

I've exhibited in NY 2011-2017, and Bay Area 2012-2017, along with a Rome fair last year, a bunch around Baltimore where I live, and Chicago and Detroit. Yes I go and sell stuff I make, but I also often bring stuff to just show off, and in NY I grab a second booth just to show off one project of mine (wethebuilders.com) that's a just for fun type deal. I lug these giant crowdsourced 3d printed sculptures up to NY just for fun. Sure I like money but I really like going and just jamming with other makers from other places. If you're just showing up to exhibit and not sell, it's free. And you get like ~6 or so for the whole weekend.

I'd encourage a lot of you to just submit a project of anything, and change it yourself. Bring "technical engineer, hacker, hobbiest crowd" stuff. "Bring your own Rocket Ponies." Bring your own "giant art exhibits, DIY unique experience." I love going to Burning Man is awesome because of the people who participate. Come to Maker Faire and participate, instead of just showing up to attend,

I've got several passes available to those who'd like to come to the Faire. I have two booths, and It'd be great if you could help out at a booth for a few hours one of the days.
