Dataset designer problem - "FATAL: 28P01: password authentication failed...."

We're blocked by this "FATAL: 28P01" npgsql message when working with the dataset designer in VS2013.

We can see the tables and schema in the server explorer, but trying to create the model fails. Screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/VjpIk3Z.png

We can make it work by manually creating a dataset, but the same error occurs if we access the query builder.

We've tried the 2.2.0 and 2.2.4.1 releases, and the behavior happens on two different machines.

Any ideas on troubleshooting or possible workarounds?
