we had the same problem due to hardware issues. We had normal CPU
utilization but relatively high disk requests (100-700). We changed the
disk controller and storage unit and the disk i/O's dropped to zero.

Normally a 820E error means that one of the db files is locked by an other
application then Groupwise agent(s).
It got be your backup software or anti virus software that has a file
locked.
If you search for the error code 820e you'll find different TID about this
error. They should get you in the right direction to solve this.

Prior to this upgrade, my system was running for 4 months continous no
abends. Server is a Dell PE with 4 GB, dual xeon. POA have 700 users on it
although the MTA is server 2 other po's on separate servers. Total domain
users 1200.
