I'm starting a thread which will be nothing but things I pick up from the Craft newsletter and other random places that I think are awesome and that we should totally do. Or change to make awesomer.

Tron-inspired laptop bag with EL wire:

Man, I just wanna play with EL wire in general. Can we trim the HackSpace with it?

Make's Robot Plant:

Awww! The little robot flower that grows and blossoms! I love that it's made out of a tape measure. That's awesome.

On a related note - Tron Legacy = Win.

At some point (and I've been talking about doing this at HacMan for .... well a couple of years now I guess), I *really* want to make a Bluetooth Chording Keyboard, inna glove.

http://gkos.com

It uses a combination of three buttons on each hand, and you press combinations of buttons to generate the scan codes for the keyboard.

Long-term, I plan to pair it to my Desire Z (or similar phone - depending on how long it takes me to actually get around to doing this), and use it with something like IRCRadio.

Did anyone see the article in Vol 25 of Make Magazine about the "Things of Science" boxes.

Little boxes that used to get posted out monthly and would contain some small wonder within to experiment with.

There is an extensive article about the boxes here  which is from someone at MIT I think.

I think this is a really cool idea... I think it could be revived too... we have all the knowledge of the world at our finger tips but how often can we actually touch an item or really experiment with something.

I would love to make these and send them out in the post again, maybe with a Hackspace branding on them. It would be an interesting though I suspect a lot of work for small reward.

Those vending machines look retro. Beware of the old refrigerated ones
though!!!

A '90s cold drinks machine will use 3000-4500 kwh/year. If we leave it
on 24/7, that'll be somewhere around 350-550 pa. And that is probably
a couple of tonnes of CO2 emissions? Plus they can be extremely noisy
... so please don't put a refrigerated one in the space.

In the absence of readily available or cheap workstands, there are various things you can do with timber or pipes if you have the space.

I'll get myself an arc welder if there are any left and keep it at the space for all to use.

I taught myself on a mig welder.
Haven't used an arc.
I understand Arc welders are a little harder and a little less precise. But it would be a good start for getting the hacspace into welding.

Webpage says it comes with face sheild. Some welders leather gloves and apron wouldn't go a miss aswell.

Arc or stick welding is a bit harder than MIG. You have to hold the
electode just away from the metal to be welded
to make th arc. The advantages are that the machinery is much simpler
and doesn't go wrong like a dodgy MIG machine.

In general Stick welding is for big stuff and MIG for little stuff and
tack welding stuff together.
TIG welding, where you control a spark and feed wire in by hand as you
use it, is for the most delicate work.
It's not too hard and can give beautiful results.

I'm not world class but I'm alright at all these three types of
welding and would love to help people to learn.
I have no equipment of my own nowadays, not even a mask. I got rid of
it all when I gave up being a welder for the sake of my health and
sanity about ten years ago.

Just to be clear I'm no kind of fabricator. All the welding I have
done is production welding in factories
I have no idea how to design and build stuff. Still never too late to
learn.

I think it was the three shift system and the VERY repetetive work
that was hard.
I spent years making bicycles and repairing bicycles made by robots at
Raleigh.
Then a couple of years making seats for Ford Modeos and repairing
seats made by robots.

I can still see if a Raleigh bike was made/repaired by me. I recognise
my (very good) work.

AS to old Gods Isn't it Thor the god of ironwork and therefore of
welders? Him of the big hammer.
In Santeria/Voodoo/Camdomble it's Ogun God of Iron, technology & the
advancement of Mankind.

But God of Hackers in General? Who's that? Surely there's a Patron
Saint.

Some half hearted research tells me that:

The patron saint of those who work with computers is Saint Isidore of Sevill

St Joseph is ONE of the patron saints of engineers... figures as he was a carpenter.... bet he's also patron of carpenters too.

Personally I think R2 D2 should be the patron of Hackers or possibly McGyver.. ok Q for people who hate Americans and mullets.

Yo,
A friend of mine has gifted the hackspace a MIG welder. Its working -
he just needed it to fix his fence and its now waiting to be picked up
for us to use.
I'd love to know how to weld properly (rather than just metal blobs
which fall off when moved).
Later,
Matt

Two things today:

This was stated to me as "An equation for saying hi", which sounds like one of those super-dodgy newspaper stories claiming to be science when actually doing PR, i.e. "Person discovers equation for happiness/density of extra terrestrial life/optimum ratio of peanut butter to nutella". Actually though, it's lovely:

Secondly, this:

It's a very whimsical way to waste paper, while *also* using electricity. Therefore, he must in fact want our planet to burn to an existentially bereft cinder dotted by fallout shelters inhabited by nothing but investment bankers and politicians... but his project still made me smile. Because I'm an enormous bastard and I hate plants, obv:
