Hello all
Glad to report that stage one of our pitch to takeover the small set of rooms upstairs as a dedicated hackspace has passed stage one - ir it is agreed by Menscraft in principle. I am meeting with Andy this week to pin down terms and a general plan.

I expect that to entail money and also the process of refurbishment and fitting out the space.

I intend to suggest that Mens Shed/Menscraft are responsible for the wiring, plumbing and supply of internet as that is basic infrastructure. Also the door bar on the fire escape door (as I believe that should probably be functional anyway).

And that we are responsible for fitting out - desk, shelves etc

I think that we should offer to help clear the space in partnership with them in case there are things that they/we want to keep

I know they are keen on swipe door locks, not only on our space but also in the main entry doors downstairs (this is possibly something we can trade with)

So before I talk with Andy, can I have a show off hands as to who could do/is willing to do/has the skills to do the following

a) help clear the space on a Saturday (probably) in late January/early February
b) help with wiring and plumbing (led by Matt)
c) decide what to do with the doors and door locks and can project manage the creation of locks on the Fire escape door, the internal door between the hackspace and the rest of the building and the two front doors (we can buy some stuff to experiment with if necessary). I knw that some work has been doe but we need to pin it down

I think we need to get these things sorted before we move onto installing desks, shelves etc. We have the MDF and scaffold from the Castle but i think we need to see the space clear before we plan it.

BTW Toby and I have put in an application to the Town Close Trust although we haven't been able to speak to the guy in charge as recommended  to check our draft bid but hope to next week

Please get back to me with solid offers!
all best

I should be available for clearing the room and fitting it out. I'll need a solid date to arrange child care though. I'll help with the physical installation of the door equipment too.

Happy to help need to liase with menscraft on the fire escape crash furniture etc... And electrics and plumbing.

What about putting some thought to plans we have and comments? Not sure if I circulated my room layout to everyone?

We should setup a list of jobs and allocate them to people

Well to kick that off who is going to project manage the door lock? There are a number of people working on it including Toby, Ben, Chris and Paul to my knowledge - can you form a group and can one person make sure it moves along? That project can be progressing irrespective of the room itself

I will liaise with Menscraft in the first place and establish what they will do and what we are responsible for

Then we need a clearing gang but we need Matt for that - I imagine it will be a Saturday say 10am to 4pm

Then electrics is next - we will know about that after I have met with Andy

After electrics and plumbing comes painting and then putting up the desks and shelves

Maybe we need a pub meeting with the plans in about two weeks? Ben can you do a pub meeting? Or a Saturday morning with the plans in the space once it is cleared out? And a list of equipment that we want to house inc footprint and height.

Pub meeting is possible depends on day etc... and my work schedule which also has an impact on weekend availability as well i.e family time but will do what I can when I can.

I can share a pdf/word file copy of my first thoughts on plans and then I guess what would be a good idea would be to fire up the big plotter at home to be able to print out some large copies.

Great. Maybe Graham and I can take on management of the refit/decoration?
Toby and Ben on door lock

We all need to help of course, we are just talking about project leads to make sure things go forward

Hello Marion

All very exciting. Can't come tonight but put me down for clearout or design/refit. I've got plenty tools and experience for fitting out workspaces and studios.

Yes a good idea to have  a bigger plan and we also ought to take into account what we have from the Castle now that we have it

I can't do Saturday this week, but can do the one after in the afternoon. Taiko finishes at about 1:15 so before that I'll provide you with soundtrack and then join you for clearing up.

I started clearing the space upstairs today (Wednesday) under the guidance of Matt. There is a rather large pile to the right of the fire door which needs taking to the dump.

If anyone is willing to help I can bring a trailer in on Saturday 30th and we can make a dump trip otherwise next Wednesday 11-4pm. Saturday is remembering Steve's BBQ at the Mens Shed.

Is the plan to clean the carpet tiles and reuse or are these destined black bin liner too.

In the loo area are bags of bubble wrap - any uses
Three sheets of hardboard could be laid on the floor prior to carpet/carpet tiles.
Three sheets of 12mm chipboard need a use or a stored somewhere.

There is a shelving system which might be utilised although requires some work and extra materials.

When the area is clear it will give Matt a better chance to sorting out some lighting.

Alan

Amazing, great start. I could probably swing by one lunch time with the estate and take a load to the dump.

Just in case anyone doesn't know, tomorrow Saturday 30 January, is Steve's Memorial Day at the Men's Shed.

Matt from Men's Shed and Hackspace has made Steve an amazing chair which will be fixed outside the fire exit door where Steve used to sit. All are welcome to come and remember him and there will be a BBQ from 2pm with an unveiling of the chair at 3pm

Alan and I are meeting there at 11am to clear the room upstairs. If anyone can help and/or wants a say in what is kept, please let me know if you can come via this thread. If three or four people can spend an hour we can probably get the rooms clear enough to make a plan and for Matt to start the electrics

This is my version 1 of a possible layout for the upstairs space suggested equipment locations.

I'll put together some others as well especially bearing in mind of opening up the far end room as there is a toilet in the middle room, this would give us 2 reasonable sized rooms and the corridor for storage.

Possible layout for the end room with a minor bit of demolision, biggest pain in this area is the position of the soil stack but nothing we can do about that.

The A3 Blacknose will fit through all the door ways in to here.

I've put a suggestion on the number of power outlets down here more is always better but due to cost we need to keep it down, I'm not a big fan of extension leads as they often have too much plugged in to them.

The main room needs at least a couple of double sockets where there are benches.
