Hello all
Norwich Hackspace is committed to taking part in the Maker Month at The Forum. It has been themed in four 'weeks' through February and we are part of the last week, Print and Paper.

We have agreed to loan them the 'spare' 3D printer to have working in the Forum from Monday 22nd to Sunday 28th. On Saturday 27th we are due to soend the day in the Forum 'manning the printer' and talking to people about 3D printing (and Norwich Hackspace)

Forum staff will look after the printer during the week and it can print simple things like trolley coins, sharks etc, and maybe something with a Forum or an Easter theme (like Alina's Castle and Hackspace piece) and Ann's Christmas decorations. The Forum will pay for filament so we can order some more, maybe three rolls?
  • Thursday/Friday 19/20 February
  • One or two volunteers needed to take the printer in and train the Forum team

  • From Monday 22-Friday 26 February
  • The printer will be on a plinth and Forum staff will set prints going and take them off
  • Near the plinth will be a table with 3D printed object which people can pick up and handle but not take away
  • The public can take away robots and trolley coins as they print
  • Saturday 27 February
  • We need to take in the 2nd printer for just the day
  • We need a small team to host a table near the printer with projects
  • A laptop with CURA and Thingiverse to show people the process
  • Any other ideas of things to show people esp 3D printing but other things too

Checklist
  • We need some interesting interesting things to print lined up on an SD card (any offers?)
  • We need a couple of people to take the printer in to the Forum on 18/19 February (possibly 20th if that is difficult)
  • Volunteers to pop in during the week for an hour or so at a time to check things and talk to people (esp lunchtime)
  • Volunteers for Saturday 27th (Brian has offered to take his microscope project)
  • Order filament (I can do that)
  • Flyers (I will order some)
  • Update on the website (Toby)
Please get in touch if you want to/can be involved

If you still have any of the SD cards from the castle and could get one to Hackspace tomorrow I could put a set of print files together.  There are quite a few Easter things on Thingiverse which we could try out, to be topical but it would be a good idea if I could send them to you for test prints first to make sure we aren’t putting dodgy ones on the SD card.

Hi was having a look at a few bits.
Norwich castle has a Dragon themed display, and Norwich and Dragons seem to be a thing,
How about Dilbert the dragon, reduced it to half size and prints in about 45 mins on Normal.
I am nearly their with the first microscope camera, looks real good, so will have some prototypes and documentation pictures etc of that for display and take final thing on the saturda with microscope.

Is delivery and parking easy or possible? any ideas.

Not sure about setting up, but think might be able to help.

There's not parking on the castle mound itself so castle mall is nearest but pricey.

Hello Alan
I printed the bookmark but it is quite thin, a bit too thin really - though you may disagree. I am going to try another print with more layer thickness and without a brim. Should have given it to Toby tonight. Ann, I did give him some SD cards though

When we did the printing at the castle last time we used the car park on the mound for dropping off stuff. Not sure we would be permitted to leave cars there though as it get a bit busy,  especially at weekends.

Dragon for printing at forum
The one I brought along was yesterday was Dorus unsupported which I did at 50% height
this printed in about 75 mins.

I can have a display of bits and comments on my microscope camera project, and can bring final (working!) result along on the saturdau.

When are you taking stuff and setting up? as I might be able to come along and help.

Just a basic black would be good for me, I could pay you for it so I could make a few microscope cameras.

If you want to print Dragons then a bright Green would be good.

And if you want dragon eggs then Purple?

but any bright colours would go down well.

Do we have a choke tester? do we need to check the size to make sure we do not give any child something they could swallow and it be a problem?

Mostly what we want two or three large prints that we can display. At the Castle we also printed trolley coins and robots for people to take away. We could print shark clips and a few medium sized items to sell on the Saturday. The trolley coins could be a choke hazard in theory but they will be out of reach of children and given to parents and in any case, that is for the Forum to handle during the week and for us at the weekend

I'll do an inventory of colours tonight

A dragon and a couple of eggs is a good idea. I am going to print some household bits, not sure which yet. Would like to do a lamp.

For the 'permanent display' I think we need two hands (we have these) - Dan, did you print a mini Raptor hand - can we have one of tjhose? I will print something like a cup and saucer (I did one before) and maybe a lamp.

Alan has done a bookmark - Alan can you thicken it a bit? Alina has done a mini Forum but it looks a bit dark in black

haha a mini forum is a great idea.

If the tokens are a choke hazard, then so are all pound coins.

I can put together a microscope camera for the display, leaving raspberry pi out of the build (so no problem if it goes walkies), and some photos and explanation.

If you are after display pieces I notice their are articulated dragons, which would look cool.

see dragon

guess would take some putting together.

I have a small silver dragon and printing a small egg which I hope it will fit in.

Can print a larger one, might be good to show how you can scale them up and down.

I was only asking about choke hazard as dragon I printed is 3cm high, fairly shore would be OK and as you say if the forum staff giving them out they can mention they are not for eating :-)

OK, I will get more red, orange and a green I think. I have the rest now. There is a full reel of grey NGen. Do we want to try ad swap it or do people like it? I haven't used the white as I haven't had time to work out what I need to do to adjust the settings. Shall I get the same red or a transparent red?

Attached a thicker bookmark, added 0.6mm so should be 1.2mm thick overall at the bottom and 2mm at the top, Not sure if it will still flex enough though, I copied the original thickness off a Thingverse design. The 0.6mm thickness is surprisingly flexible, attempts where made Monday to snap it!

How are things going for volunteers during the week? I can be in the Library during the week (doing 3D design stuff on the laptop for my Birdbox project so mutually beneficial!) except Tuesday 23rd, if maybe Jay or someone could help explain setup on Friday 20th and/or Monday 22nd?
