Hi,

I am assuming you have joined this group because you are interested in being part of the Norwich Hackspace. If you are not sure what a hackspace is in general then read this Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hackerspace

Every Hackspace is different because to be successful it needs to cater for the interests and capabilities of it members. So the purpose of this post is to gather information about what our members want. Please post a message with a description of what you would like to do in the space and what you could offer to it. Don't worry it's not a commitment and we won't hold anyone to anything. A bit of description about who you are would also be nice but share as much or as little as you like.

I would like to:
  • Build and use opensource hardware projects. Arduino, rapid prototyping (Reprap, makerbot etc)
  • Share the cost of big things that I could not afford to own personally. Laser cutter, cnc mill/lathe
  • Share workshop space and tools to make random things
  • Run some web programming workshops
  • Have access to a stock of useful bits and bobs (wood, metal, nut & bolts, electronics, motors, etc)
  • Be part of a group of like minded people
I could offer
  • Basic Arduino workshops
  • Programming workshops in Javascript, PHP, Python, NodeJs, Agile development, automated deployments etc
  • Plenty of ideas and verbal waffle
  • Contacts with various interesting people in Norwich & London
I have always been interested in how things work and love taking things apart as much as putting things together. I have a classic mini that I do simple mechanical work on and would love to learn more about car mechanics. I have some basic skills in electronics, soldering, making circuit boards and following schematics. I can do a bit of wood work and a bit of welding but can't say I am expert in either. I am a web developer by profession and would like to teach what I have learnt to other people as well as use those skills to provide services to the hackspace. I like photography and have a decent camera and a few good lenses. I like cycling and have a couple of bikes for on and off road use, I can build and repair computers. I love food and cooking and am very interested in technical cooking like sous vide

My desire for a Norwich hack space comes from being part of the London hackspace which catered for a wide range of interests and is run in a very democratic way. They have a group of people that value trust, honesty and really help each other out as much as possible. I think Norwich naturally has such people and could do great things as group. We have a lot of untapped potential in this city which is often seen as a back water but is crammed full of seriously clever and creative people.

The first step to creating this community is to build this group. The second step is to get everyone down the pub. The third step will be determined after a few pints.

toby

Hi there,

I would also be keen to have a setup along the lines of London hackspace.

Here is my personal list of would likes:

- shared basic workshop machinery, tools, pcb etch tank and a laser cutter would be nice!
- shared materials - wood, metal and electrical components etc
- shared clean area / solder station.
- a kitchen area would be useful
- I am particularly interested in music tech so a basic crumby test studio would be cool (mixer, old/cheap monitors)
- a creative social enviroment that is an alternative to wasting time/money/brain cells in the pub!
- a mono-rail, a super happy fun slide and hot and cold dancing girls on tap. lol.

I could offer... umm...

- I have a rather wizzy way of making pcbs
- basic electronics and electro-mechanical skills
- basic woodwork skills
- potentially - ideas and lateral solutions to problems

I'm enthused by the whole idea, and was setting out on my own quest to make one happen when I chanced upon this group ( evidently my pre-mission search-fu was left wanting )

I would love:

- A buying group set up to secure bulk basic components are low cost from suppliers and make them available to group members, perhaps in exchange for donations on the honor system ( shift registers, leds, resistors, pots and hopefully some bigger shinier stuff, ie: all the basics for an introduction to Arduino )
- 3d printer/laser cutter!
- shared tools and things I couldn't afford on my own and wouldn't use often enough to justify
- A pool of junky old hardware to hack apart and recycle into projects

I could offer:

- Small mixing desks, cables, audio interfaces and microphones
- Assistance with all manner of gadgetry and concepts plus tutorials, guides and even lesson plans if we want to enthuse younger or less capable members and give them new skills/interests
- Hopefully good contact with and perhaps a little support from component suppliers, secured using my skills developed as a tech-journalist
- Random hardware to hack apart

Nice list Phil. A laser cutter has got to be a high priority first purchase. They are such a flexible thing to have access to and a real draw for new members. Who doesn't like lasers right?

Hello all
I assume that you all have on your radar the Hot Source network that
meets monthly (and is a good collecting place for people interested
this kind of thing, whatever it ends up being called). Hot Source has
been very supportive to the idea so far and it seems to be a natural
place to bring all interested parties together.

The next meeting is Thursday 26th July at Foolproof's offices in Queen
Street. Here's the link to the Hot Source website.
http://hotsourcenorwich.co.uk/

If everyone that is interested in setting one up can come along, then
it will be easier to all move in the same direction.

As much as I admire Hot Source, I don't really partake because, quite frankly, it's not even 1/100th nerdy enough. I went to one pub meet and it didn't seem like the right crowd to be kicking this sort of thing off. I could be terribly wrong, though!

I think we need to arrange an independent get-together specifically for the people who are enthused about the idea of a hackerspace, so we can bash out who is capable of doing what, who is currently doing what, and what we should all be doing.

I may be mad, but Kickstarter could be a good way to get an initial funding boost and some rent money in the pot. It's been done, kinda: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/nycresistor/a-hackerspace-grows-in-brooklyn

The benefit of kickstarter is the protection it offers to supporters.

Greetings from another London Hackspacer! I'm very excited about talk of another *space/lab being started up. I'll be torn deciding which to go to as I live in Colchester!

I would like at a minimum (mostly nicked from other posters and London's setup, but also the things important to me):

* a welcoming place for hobbyists, people who do this for a living and the community
* Laser cutter  & 3D printer - despite having these in my existing space they seem to be in continual repair.
* Electronics desk(s) with tools and components with exotic gear like
bus pirates
* A workshop (quiet) area to conduct training without the racket of Skype/phone calls.
* Office space for people working out of the hackspace. Desks should be wide enough to accommodate projects, paperwork or laptops + monitors.
* Storage for project/wips
* Storage for raw materials (wood, metal and plastics)

Nice to have:
* Dark room for photographers and biohackers
* kitchen
* PCB fabbing gear
* lathes, drills and saw
* Stage for music/talks with seating (forward technology in camden have an awesome space, check it out on Vimeo to see some of the events they've run)
* Mold injection kit

Skills I can offer:
* Photography
* I'm a c#/sql developer with long years as system admin. There's bound to be something I could bore people to death with.
* If it has a shell access or can run Linux I probably know how to break it intentionally.

Slightly left field skills:
* Running (could be handy if your project is about collapse on you)
* Alottmenteering ran one for three years

Hi,

I'd love to join up, but I'm just starting out.

Ideally, I'd like to:
Build a massive amplifier

I can offer:
Heavy lifting

Like I said, I'm just starting out.  Has anyone thought of speaking to UEA to see if they'd rent a workshop to us for an afternoon; at least until we got some more people?

Hi

I am also really interested in getting a Norwich Hackerspace set up!

My current skill-set is a bit off topic - consisting of mainly theatre technology knowledge - but I would love to expand it and also get some help getting the piles of crap I buy off eBay to work!

I recently went to a Culture Hack i Cambridge and met the guy from their hackspace which is called Makespace http://makespace.org/. He works for ARM in Cambridge

They got a lot of their funding from EEDA which is now dead in the water and I suspect it is a lot harder to get funding now though if anyone should it would be enterprise and creative industries that the present governrment is interested in.

Make Space is now iopen for membership having moved in to their premises. They started with a group of ;founder'  members and have just started recruiting for actual members. The uy I spoke to works for ARM

To Phil, you are probably right that Hot Source is not the right basis and there aren't many out-and-out nerds (though there are some) but for this I would argue that you need a cross section of people and most of the Hot Sourcerors are entrepreneurs and networkers and know how to sell an idea. Nerds can't always do that and we definitely need some of both. There is also Sync Norwich but my feeling is that we do need a smaller task group of people to move this on, from a cross-section of places, and either decide that we have common agendas or that there are several projects on the go that might compete.

Anyway talking to makespace might be a start. And maybe a visit?
Marion
ps I am not a nerd

Hey,

I am a founding member of Nottingham Hackspace, I can see a few other posts from friends of mine about open days and maker faires.

I found this group when searching for a friend who is semi-local who was asking if I knew of one nearer than Cambridge.

If you want some advice in order to get going, then just thought I would offer my help.
Happy to talk/skype with someone.

... and I'm the friend for whom Jake was looking.

I can't offer financial aid, but I can offer time & muscle, plus general Maker skills.

I can also offer contacts - I'm part of www.instructables.com*, and I'd happily access their sponsorship program, which could get the Hackspace a small 3d printer or cnc router.

Why don't we just arrange a time for a get-together in a pub and/or a hands-on session where everyone bring their current project to the table, a kind of show and tell? That would get things going a bit and we can meet face-to-face. I am happy to organise such a thing especially if someone let's me know whether we need a 'dirty' workshop-type space or whether a clean meeting type space will do? And weekend or evening?

Who would be interested?

How about just a sit down in a pub first, gauge numbers and have a chat about what we all want from a hackspace, and what we could each provide in terms of experience, resources, venue, etc.

This is my first time reading about Hackerspaces but already I know it's something I'd like to be involved with.

I'm more focused on the computer side of things, tinkering with code, security, websites, hacking, hardware and lots of other things. I'm a systems administrator so I can help set up a computer lab, and may be able to donate hardware towards doing so.

I don't have any major projects on the go at the moment but would like to contribute towards anyone seeking help on interesting projects, or just generally pass on my knowledge to anyone interested and willing to learn.

I agree with Toby, once we have enough interest we should consider a pub meet and then discuss future ideas over a few pints.

I would love to organise this but a bit busy already with a charity fundraising party and Norwich Fringe Festival as well as normal work. But I could maybe sort out a venue and time/date in September if other people are up for it.

Hi all!

I'm from Brazil, living in UK for the past 5 months and the next 18 months or so.

I do some personal projects now and then, usually involving mobile phones, electronics, kites, software development and more. I'd love to have a hackspace to develop them and meet like minded hackers to exchange ideas and experience.

This week I was passing by the St. Lawrence church and noticed some signs about "The Common Room". It seems that it can become a hackspace in the future. Quoting from the "WHO WILL LIKE THE COMMON ROOM":

Great ideas, projects and enterprises seldom originate from a single person working in isolation.

For stimulation, enthusiasm and collaboration we need to work in an environment full of people, ideas, learning, conversation ... And lots of cups of tea.

The Common Room could be just such a space.

If you are a …

LOCAL SHOPKEEPER OR START UP BUSINESS
Innovate your business model, start a collective project, integrate more social benefit, grow local loyalty and connectedness.
Selling musical instruments? Host a Trade School lesson teaching more people to play.
Selling vintage clothes? Start the Sewing Room and help create a whole town of fashion designers and recyclers.

GROWER OF PLANTS, NETWORKS AND IDEAS
Plant for a local harvest, nurture relationships with meals at the long table, test ideas in the greenhouse meeting space.

YOUNG PERSON LOOKING FOR INSPIRATION AND ENTERPRISE KNOWHOW
Join or start a project, come to a discussion, ask questions, try teaching something, and explore what interests you.

FREELANCER OR HOME-BASED WORKER
Get out and seek inspiration and conversation, set a regular time for a tea break, pop in to check your emails, club together and buy the A3 printer you've always wanted!

RETIRED, BUT FULL OF ENERGY AND IDEAS
Start a new project with new friends. Share your experience in building, sewing, cooking, writing...

MAKER, DESIGNER, CRAFTER, ARTIST OR FIXER
Drop by to use equipment, prototype your ideas, tinker with repairs and bring electrics back to life.

PARENT LOOKING AFTER YOUNG CHILDREN
Create some precious time to develop your ideas with others, pop on the kettle and chat while the children use the play area. Include your kids in a new type of dynamic and creative community as they grow...

Check the site for more information and details about The Common Room.

Hi, guys,
I'm a textile artist/maker, probably not the most obvious person to be involved in something like this, but I do use digitally manipulated images in some of my work...  I would LOVE to have access to a laser cutter, and a  3D printer, both for my own work, and for work I do with adults with learning difficulties...   I'm also open to collaborative work.  I'd love to extend my practice to use technology more fully within my own work, and with the guys I volunteer with.

What I can offer... well, I've been a board member of a not for profit gallery, a background in HR and business... am a volunteer small business mentor... as well as being a trained facilitator, experience in self development and self management skills.  I live near Dereham.

Looking forward to finding out more, in the first instance...

Hi Marion.
Thanks for getting in contact with us!  As you can see from the posts here the hackerspace is something that has been mooted in the past without amounting to much!  We're are trying to revive the idea and a few things have happened of late.  We will be launching a Meetup group in the next couple of days to help let people know when we are meeting and how things are developing.  We look forward to meeting you!

Hi Marion
Funny having two Marions in the mix, doesn't happen that often. But I think it is fair to say that we are open to a lot of different kinds of people who want to make and break things (and make new things with them), including artists of all kinds.

Shortly sending out details of the next get together plus notes of the last meeting. Think we are trying to grow the group in a manageable way, getting to know who we are are and how we can work together and what skills we have to put into developing a group.

Hello everyone
Can I point out that we now have a Norwich Hackspace meetup group? A small number of people from this Google group* met last Monday and we agreed a few things:

That
  • We would call our group Norwich Hackspace. The Meetup group includes both Hackspace and Makespace in the name while we build the community, so that we can attract both camps of people (as they are essentially the same). We thought it could be an advantage to align with the national hackspace movement. This could change later but it gets us going.
  • We decided to start with some meetings - a social 'Who's Who' to begin with, so we get to kow each other - probably on a Monday soon, at a pub - we are just pinning down date and venue - and a workshop.

  • Toby has offered to run an introduction to Arduino session.
  • We will also set up a project share evening where people can bring along projects that they are involved in and work on them together.
  • We would also like other people to offer either talks and demos - with the emphasis on doing. Please email this group if you are willing
  • We will beg, borrow and, well not steal, venues until the day when we have our own and we have a couple of offers already. We will charge a small amount for workshops and ask for donations at meetings so that we can build a small working pot of money but as with most hackspaces - it's on the basis of what you can afford - we would rather have you there than not.
  • We agreed that our main platform of communication would be this Google group and a MeetUp group so please mosey over to  http://www.meetup.com/Norwich-Hack-Makerspace-Meetup/ and join up. Please fill in the intro so that we know who you are. This is how we will organise meetings. And we will have a website eventually.
  • We hope that once we start having activities that people can get involved in, we will have a membership and can start to fundraise for premises of our own, but that is in the future. We also need a small number of people who like to get involved in setting up the group, admin and organising - so if that is your thing then please put a hand up! Otherwise, just join the meetup group and come to the meetings, that will be fine.

Have a good weekend all and don't forget to join the MeetUp group and spread the word
* People who met were Fred, Jarryd, Karl, Toby and Marion who are currently a kind of steering group

Hello everyone.

Great to find you!
I've just moved to Norwich 2 weeks ago and still trying to understand it.

I've been pretty close to the Garoa Hacker Space ( https://garoa.net.br/ ) , in São Paulo, Brazil , since its foundation and launched (along with two of the founders of Garoa) the first 100% free hardware and software Brazilian 3D printers startup - Metamáquina ( http://www.metamaquina.com.br/ and more on Google itself). It was a great experience and worth mentioning it was also the first startup to be crowdfunded in Brazil!

I know pretty well how Garoa developed, the problems it faced, the day to day and etc.

I've also been involved with another amazing initiative (that was actually the one hosting Garoa), the Casa da Cultura Digital ( http://br.wikimedia.org/wiki/Casa_da_Cultura_Digital and http://www.casadaculturadigital.com.br/ ) and some other coworkings and collaborative initiatives.
I've been quite active in the Brazilian startup and innovation scene for the last three years and would love to carry on that here in Norwich and even help setting it up.

Please count on me!

Filipe

Hey all!
I was at the "Dip your toe in the Arduino pool" which was a great talk, I kind of rushed the intro sheet as I didn't have much time to finish it so I thought I'd just chuck up this digital one as it is easier and I can be a bit more detailed.

As a quick intro, I'm Adam, I basically make bespoke robotics to order as well as working on commercial open source hardware projects. After meeting all of the wonderful people at the Arduino workshop I hope I'm going to quite heavily involved with organising and helping with the backspace.

I would like to:
  • A place to work on hardware/software Projects
  • A place encouraging sharing to work on interesting things with other people
  • Tools/ machinery (3d printers, laser cutters etc) To share the cost.
  • A good mix of people from artists to programmers to engineers etc.
  • Lots of talks and workshops so that people can share skills and learn things.
I could offer
  • Workshops in most robotics style things. (electronics, mechatronics etc) then programming in Python, Arduino and C++.
  • Physics and simulation knowledge.
  • Talks on theoretical aspects of robotics and electronics.
  • Contacts

For next week the way it looks like its shaping up, I'm going to bring my open source robotics kit and a virtually finished simulator for said kit, and we'll do a little basic bit of python, then progress onto putting on the simulation and making sure it works, then we'll try it out on the actual robot. All levels of skill welcome.

Hi,

I'm an artist based in norwich. Ive recently been involved with Collusion Real time Lab in cambridge. Something that I found from this lab was that the connection between art and technology are important and It can be a useful experience to join people from different backgrounds together to develop ideas with relevant application.
I am also interested in using/learning the basics of Mbed, arduino, C++, raspberry Pi, Sensors and data visualisation and would love some help with it. I have ideas that I would like to further and collaborate with the help of experienced and knowledgable people.

I'm interested in joining a Hackspace. I would like to do and be a part of everything that you have pointed out on your list.

I studied photography at university so I could offer:

Large format camera experience (4x5)
digital camera basics
photographic lighting techniques
Photoshop basics
Premier Pro basics
Black and white film developing and printing

It's really exciting to know that something like is it happening in Norwich and you have my full support and help if needed.

Hello Tom
Thanks for getting in touch. I also come from an arts-based interest and saw the Collusion application form but I wasn't free to apply. And in any case, I need to work with some other people to develop some kind of arts practice as most of the time I actually spend organising other people's art. But I would really like to start working on some digital projects, even simple ones.

It looks as though things are developing a bit. Tonight I went to visit the Men's Shed in Pitt Street who are willing to offer us some space. The Men's Shed membership is free and they welcome anyone (male) to join but they are happy to have mixed gender groups use the space at certain times. With a bit of management, I think we could well have a starter base for the hackspace and of course, any Norwich Hackspace members (the majority) that wish to have more access can join the Men's  Club. They have a lot of space and quite a bit of equipment and are a very nice bunch of people that like to hangout.

They are interested in more 'techy' things but currently don't have the skills within their group

We also have offers of space for sessions at Norwich Library and also at Epic so I think we now have three possibilities for sessions.

Have you joined the MeetUp group? That is where we notify the group of meetup and activity sessions. It would be great to meet you in person
Best regards
Marion

Hi Marion,

I have joined the meet up group but it said theres nothing coming up, so I thought I would message you directly. I would love to meet up and discuss what the possibilities are for sessions and when I could help/do something.
Is there anything coming up soon? I recently brought a raspberry Pi, When I get some money I am going to get some other bits. I'm really interested in BLE technology and the incorporation of geolocated beacons with in a public artwork. I also want to learn how to set up circuits involving buttons and motors that will also collect data and then somehow visualise that data  in an interesting way.

If you are free to meet up, let me know when. I'm extremely flexible at the moment.

Cheers,

Tom

Hi there came across the Norwich hackspace after finding out about the London biohackspace! Little bit about myself I'm Sheldon I'm 25, I'm a small business owner in Norwich and I study Biochemistry at UEA.  I've got interests and skills in basic coding e.g HTML and CSS for websites etc and computer building as well as genetics and the general field of biochemistry!

I'd like to get involved in some of the coding stuff and possibly try and get some low level synthetic biology going such as gene modification or general lab fun! I've seen that other hackspaces have had lab set ups and whilst I appreciate its pretty ambitious I reckon its possible what with the university presence etc! This is an example of the london biohackspace projects http://biohackspace.org/projects/pyrocystis-fusiformis/ as to what I'm suggesting for a Noriwch hackspace I'm not entirely sure but for instance I've done some low level genetic modification for gene exploring and cloned in DNA from jellyfish into E.coli as part of my studies (the end result was that the E.coli glowed under UV light so it's pretty interesting) Not sure if that'd be doable but interesting nonetheless!

Sounds great Sheldon. We are just in the process of confirming a regular time slot at the Men's Shed in Pitt Street, and we will start with an open meeting to suggest some projects and to find out what people want to do. We have to feel our way a bit because we are borrowing space on a weekly basis so we have to find out what will fit with Men's Shed activities but we also have other places we can use.

I will let you know via this group when we have the open meeting, or join the Norwich Hackspace meetup group. What is your business?

Hello Sheldon
Yes we are thinking about looking for some seed funding. I have a meeting with the deputy leader of Norwich City Council (likely to be leader in May) next week and also with Norfolk County Council which might be a more likely route in many ways. Ultimately we want to fund via membership rather than grants but it would be useful to have a sum to get going with

Hi Sheldon,
Thanks for your introduction. We are actively looking for people who are willing to start projects and share knowledge. The more people we have the more we can do, and the more we do, the more people we attract.

We can certainly help with the web dev and I am in the process of planning a Hackspace web dev course to attract new members, just like you!

As for the bio hacking, I never really got into the bio stuff at London Hackspace. I just made sure to steer clear of anything marked "biohackers" in the shared fridge. We very much encourage diversity and if you would like to do a presentation or workshop or run a sub group then we would help out in any way we can.

Laser cutters are fantastic tools I think I've seen one member running some crowd funding towards a trotec I think laser can I also throw in to the mix http://hpclaser.co.uk/ there lasers are based off Chinese c02 tubes backed with UK distribution and support you could get 4 of theirs for the cost of a trotec.

I may have access to versalaser laser cutter towards the end of the year and would be willing to donate it as I don't have the space to house it.

I currently run a laser diode as a 2nd head on my reprap 3d printer and that can be useful for small engraving projects and laser paint pcb production.

Back into this string after quite a while and reading back see a lot of people who were interested in a Hackspace in Norwich before we actually got one going - so just to make sure that you all know that we are having regular member sessions hosted at Norwich Men's Shed on Mondays and Wednesdays 7-9pm ish each week (Bank holidays excepted). If you are interested in joining, come to a free first session and joining details are here on www.norwichhackspace.org.

Or get back with any questions - hope to see you at the hackspace soon

London Hackspace use Just Add Sharks and choose them after an extensive review process. they were especially impressed with the customer service i think. They have the big A0 Silverfish.

They Greyfin looks great with the 60watt tube and big cutting area. I was thinking the Blacknose 40W A3 would be a more attainable starting point at £3k. I guess it just comes down to money.

I think we should create a pledge and try to drive it from sponsorships and grants.

Hi all,

I've recently moved to Norwich from Cambridge. I was a member of the Cambridge Makespace for just a few months, although I never made very good use of it and in all honesty; wasn't a very active/involved member; I loved the atmosphere and ethos of the community work space and am very pleased to see there is a very real chance of one cropping up here in Norwich.

I would like to
- Do some oxygen-propane brazing, or any other kind of brazing/welding
- Learn to use metalwork lathes/mills
- Build bicycle frames/stems

I could offer
- An oxy-propane brazing kit/help using it
- General help; settings things up, moving things around, that sort of jazz

Welcome Josh,
Please come and visit us on one of our member sessions. Monday at 7pm would be best as the wednesday session is just getting going.

We have access to a forge and recently had some guys join that want to make armour. We also have some welders (I am pretty novice but so far everything has held together) and folk that are keen to share.  I for one am a fan of steelies & single speeds and would love to build a custom frame (although i need to finish some projects rather than start new ones). I know a few guys that at the Dandy horse bike shop that are into all things fixie/ss that might well be able to help out.

What we need at the moment is members with a passion and willing to get stuck in. It is an exciting time right now as we are growing and getting dedicated space.

see you monday

Just because I don't want to barrel in and look silly - are the Hackspace sessions open to everyone? I don't want to come along on a Monday at 7 only to find that it's a Men's session.

Hi Kara!
Yes the hackspace sessions are open to all, ladies and gentlemen!  You are very welcome to pop along and meet us on Monday's!

Hi Kara,
Although we share the building with men's shed all of our sessions are open to any gender. We actually do very well for balance so far.

Come on a Monday at 7pm and we can give you a tour and explain what we are all about and you can tell us what things you are interested in.

Toby
