At the meeting last night, someone realized that NWMA was founded almost 50 years ago and that there should be a party. Not many of the original people are still around, but Rita Kepner (one of the founders) and John Mathieson say  if there is one, they will be there.

Sounds like a good reason for a party.  Didn't they say it was 1967 so two years away?

Joe with my memory I can't be sure but I thought I heard someone say the 50 would be 2 years off.  Best talk to someone with a bit more history with the club.

Hey All,
I'm going off of the only document I have with any history in the Commodore's folder. This was compiled by Howard White in 1987, it's a list of officers starting in 1967 with Jim Staggs listed as first Commodore. I could reach out to John Marples, I have his contact and he is first listed as director in 1981, might have some info. The club could be older if I'm missing a second sheet. 2017 would be the 50th, I recommend we throw a huge 1960's party on a beach.

If thats the only historical evidence you have thats good enough for me.  The exact date doesn't matter that much to us newbies......any excuse for a party.

Sure, why not reach out to some of the old-timers to see if we can nail down the club beginnings any better.  Maybe some of them are monitoring this or some other group.  Would Larry Christianson or others have any old papers hidden away that might help?

As for location/time, we should consider piggy backing it with something else, like our May rendezvous/regatta or the start of the R2AK, or maybe the weather is more reliable in Sept for the Wooden Boat festival.  I can see pros and cons.  Lets discuss it next meeting.

We held a 30th Anniversary party and there was a lot of past commodores there.  There has to be a list somewhere (I don't have it!).  Perhaps Mark and Diane have some info in their stash of club stuff.  The party was arranged by Marty and Neil Bryant.  It couldn't hurt to ask them if they have anything, although it has been 20 years!

1967 should be about right, and yes, Jim Staggs was the first commodore. I'll check with Rita Kepner as she was married to Jim at the time.

Here is the info I got from Rita:

Here is what I remember:
No one to ask...
I arrived in Seattle from Connecticut in 1966.  In New England I had met Arthur Piver at a sailor group meeting and was all ready to build a world-cruising sailboat in the back yard in 2 or 3 weeks (joke).  I think it was Art Piver that suggested finding the little club in Seattle, but it could have been one of the enthusiasts at the New England group.
I honestly cannot remember how I found the little group that was the early club, but do remember going to meetings once a month, and I know it was at individual homes.  I am certain that it was Jim Staggs who started the group and it may have been 1965, but I did not attend a meeting until fall of 1966.  It grew from 7 or 8 people to 15 or 20 crowding into rotating living rooms of people, some of whom had projects started in their back yards.  At one crowded meeting of wide-eyed dreamers someone proposed finding a hall to meet more comfortably.  We found the one where you are now, and at each meeting passed the hat to pay that night's rent.

It became the first Friday early on -- I think it was the first Friday at the homes.  Over time, people decided to get slightly more organized with rules and by-laws and a non-profit status.  That helped with getting discounts on supplies.  Jim Ruby wanted to find a small "clubhouse" to buy -- even found a small old building somewhere on the waterfront as I recall, but fund raising to pay a down-payment got voted down because everyone was going to build their dream boats and soon be gone...

Ellen Ruby and I and a few others who were there at the time argued down a women's auxiliary proposal from one of the guys.   We women had sawdust in our veins and fiberglass in our hair. We were part of the group.  End of that discussion.

A newsletter mailed to all who asked (later all who paid dues of $5)  kept us together with information and reminders of the upcoming meetings.  Of course, all volunteer. Coffee, wine and beer were early fringe benefits to attending the meetings.  Put money in a can. The group grew in size to fill the hall and we had speakers, designers, of merit who would fly in from all over to talk to us.  In monthly magazines, we followed and discussed the stories of Donald Crowhurst racing his trimaran around the world, and also Piver's disappearance off of California.

Good memories...

I would guess 1967 was the official transition year based on Rita's letter. Regardless of the actual date, a party is still in order!
We should work on an official history document at some point. It would be good to fill in 1987 to present.

Thanks Joe,

Fun to hear about the early days.  I was just a kid in junior high sailing my dads old leaky Snipe.  Always had to bail it out first, til later in the season when the wood swelled with water and sealed up the seams.

So '65/'66 per Rita, (I don't know her but we're all in the same club, right?).   To me that sounds like a 50th wing ding is in order next summer.

It would be fun to advertise it widely to hype up interest in our club (for fun and increased membership/participation).  Not just the usual like 48 North, but also ones we ordinarily wouldn't think of like NW Yachting Mag, Lat 38, the local Lagoon & Outremer dealers websites, (they are always looking for content to generate traffic and interest).  I don't know if there are local Fontaine Pajot, Catana, etc dealers but we can find out.  Even if they are not local lets find the west coast ones, including Corsair and spread the word.  Why not put it out to the local yacht clubs to see if any old-timers are there.  People move on in boating, even to power boats!!!!!  Lets find em and invite them to come see their old friends and see what our club is up to.  Not to mention online forums and social media, though I don't know a twitter from a Facebook.  In short I think it would be a gas to find a bunch of former members or just interested folks and get them out to this party and hear their stories.

Since some former members may no longer have a boat it probably would be good to have it accessible to land, (as much as I like Blake Island, oh but there is a ferry, hmmmmm).  Also, is it Kingston that has a really nice park at the ferry dock.  Folks could just walk on at Edmonds to join us.  And there is that nice shady county park in Pt Madison where the Puget Sound Cruising Club has their annual salmon BBQ.  And as I mentioned before I think combining it with a popular event like R2AK or the wood boat festival might tip the balance for those who might be on the fence, probably need to make some reservations if we go that route.   Lots of thoughts, I look forward to a discussion at the next meeting.

Dan,

Marty and Neil Bryant were the club historians and transferred a whole slew of early newsletters and other documents onto discs.   They frequent this site but will copy Marty in case.   They are a great couple who certainly pre-date me and might know some of the history.

As a thought, we might consider a pre-celebration practice party in 2016.   Just to be sure that we know all the pitfalls of a real party:-)

Practice parties are always a good idea.

Other items:

Documents will be hard to come by. There are still a few of the early members still around. Rita's probably the best source, but Lindsay and Dana Hoffman (Yentna) and Bill Christianson (Chinook) are still in the area and active. Unfortunately I don't think Larry is in a position to help out. I've lost track of Pat Dayshaw. John Mathieson would know how to get in touch with Tom Dean and Grace Hathwell. I think Lauren Rice was one of the founders, so perhaps Andrew can help out here. Ellen Ruby was also instrumental in the early years.

In the line of commodores, I took over from Pat Dayshaw, and Dave Smith took over from me and then I think it was Marilyn Braggins. Very shortly after this, Scott Bushnell got the job. He'd be the guy to ask about the late 80s and 90s.

Rita says that Jim Ruby designed the burgee. I don't have an exact date, but it would have been very early. Jim was a designer/engineer. He and his wife Ellen took care of the club library for many years. They handed it off to Sue and me along about 1978. They had built a large cabinet that PSYC let us keep at the facility between meetings. That was very helpful as there wasn't much room aboard my AA31 for it:) Jim and Ellen sailed a self-designed and built tri named Panasea.

We ought to put our meeting dates in the events page of 48 North.  I can do this but want to confirm the dates with the club poobahs.  Typically they are the first Tues of the month.  However, I recall that this was extended to the 2nd Tues once or twice in the past.  Lets cover this briefly in tomorrows meeting.

Great.  Thanks Diane and Mark.  I was looking at the Dec issue and saw nothing.

In addition to page 29 (which I think is the "Low tide" section) there is a calendar of events section just after the letters to the editor.  I haven't seen the January edition but I imagine that the editors automatically include events described in the Low Tide section to the calendar of events section too.

In any case I think it would be a good idea to send our meeting schedule for the next several months (or rest of year) to 48 North so they can automatically add them to their calendar of events page each month...... without any further memory challenges for us.  I can look into this but again I'd like to get a confirmation of the dates, (which can be done at tonights meeting), before sending them to 48N.

Cheers
