Hi,

Being super interested in all things 3D printing, I come across a lot of snippets of information that I bookmark for future reference. I've decided it could be useful to collate some of these into a (semi) weekly digest. I'll send an email out to the group titled [3D Printing Round-up]. If you would like to add/query/completely disagree with anything they please do reply. if you think this is a terrible idea let me know and I'll cease and desist.

----

I attended this webinar on post processing and finishing of FDM models ran by MarkForge (makers of carbon fibre strand infusing FDM printers). The information is sort of skewed towards their printer, but in my experience, the techniques described could be used on any FDM print.

----

Here is an introduction to the .3MF 3d printing format. I'm still getting my head around it, but it does seem to offer many benefits over .STL and .OBJ - so it'll probably supersede them in the near future. The new Ultimaker (mk3) software (Cura based) can generate Gcode from the .3MF format.

----

I've been finding this online Gcode viewer useful. I'm only using Slic3r at the moment, and my Prusa doesn't give me much information about build times, model weight, etc…. so this gives me useful info.

----

The latest version of Fusion 360 (I know some of you use this) now has localised mesh control. What this means is that for anything you create in 360 for export as a mesh, you can select areas and apply different mesh generation parameters just for that area. This is super useful for keeping file size down, ultimately allowing you to work on much lower spec. machines.

----

This purports to allow you to create multicoloured FDM models *with the printer you already own* by analysing multi-colour (part) models and splicing together filament into sequences prior to it entering your printers heated extrusion chamber…. I'd like to see some prints off of it…

---

Cheers

You can't really compare 3MF to OBJ and STL, 3MF is too highly specialised for manufacturing to be compared with general purpose mesh file formats.

With certainly, OBJ will not be going away as it is still a widely used format for graphics and visualisation.
As a result I also can't see 3D scanning moving away from OBJ.

In terms of storing meshes, 3MF and OBJ don't seem overly different (although I just had a quick look at the spec).

A better idea would have been to have an additional file to store the manufacturing related data and attach it to an OBJ (pretty much how materials work in OBJ already).

Completely agree about STL though.
STL sucks.

I've no idea why STL even became the popular format, it is inferior to OBJ in every way possible.

I think it is an excellent idea - could I add the suggestion that you also copy and paste into the wiki or somewhere similar for reference?

David

Great round up, very interesting - will look forward to future updates.

Love the idea of storing for future reference too - the website blog makes a lot of sense to me...
