Mesh generation from point clouds

Anyone know of any 3D reconstruction software/techniques/algorithms that do point cloud alignment and generation?

I'm interested in making this (partially) the subject of my dissertation this year and want to get a good idea of what there is already in this area and particularly how well it operates when point clouds are moderately to very misaligned or contain too few features for a confident alignment.
