Hello North East Makers!

I'm Jasmine from Tindie and I'll be in town from the 26th to 30th April with Jenny List from Hackaday to participate in Maker Faire UK. We're looking forward to coming up to Newcastle and hoping we'll have a chance to meet and see your projects, and maybe get to check out the local Maker Space.

We'd like to host a Bring-A-Hack/Beer-n-hacks meetup to get local makers and Hackaday and Tindie folk together. We're thinking Friday or Sunday evening, but don't want to conflict with other events that might be going on, so let us know if there are? We're also up for collaborating or co-hosting an event.

Also, I'd be grateful for any suggestions for pubs or venues where we could host the meetup? Ideally centrally located, with a function room or largish area we can gather and show off handheld or tabletop hacks, and no room rental fee.

Thanks,
Jasmine

Hi Jasmine,

Welcome to Newcastle. It is great that you can come.

The problem with Fridays is that many of those exhibiting will be setting up, and the problem with Sunday is everyone is shattered from the event and heading hone. Out of the two I feel Friday is the one to go for. What does everyone else feel?

I don’t know of anything planned yet. I am still waiting to hear back about a meeting related to the future of the faire that some will be going to, but that should not take all that long.

It might also be worth considering the Saturday. Historically some satay at the venue for food while others go meet up with friends, then we eventually gather at a pub set close to the station. On some years we have moved the party over to Maker Space later on. I wonder if it could work to have your meet at that pub we gather at. It has changed hands in recent years thought and we are contemplating a move.

As for the venue, Friday and Saturday are tricky to book space for free in Newcastle. We can probably offer the use of the Maker Space workshop for this if you want to supply a few drinks. It is in the heart of the city and less than 10 minutes walk from the station.

All the best,

  Alistair

It sounds a great idea to meet up with other Tindie folk

It's also worth mentioning that the pubs in Newcastle get really busy on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.

Doing a Meetup on Saturday at the Maker Space sounds like a good plan. Especially as both Jenny and I want to check out the space.

Alistair, would you be the best person to coordinate logistics with or should I get in touch with someone else?

Cheers

I like the idea of having a big meetup at Maker Space with Maker Faire UK makers and the UK Tindie and Hackaday representatives :)
Cheers,
Jon.

If there is a question of where to go on the Friday/Saturday from Centre for Life, I can suggest Crows Nest as a very good candidate.  Good ale, good food, there wasn't music this evening (Friday) and will check if this is the norm also on a Saturday.

Any suggestions for which pizza place to order from?

Looking forward to seeing you!

Just want to say a big thank you to everyone for making the Saturday get-together happen :)

I really enjoyed meeting lots of new faces (and soldering with them too!), as well as helping one of the (York?) makers get going with Maker Faire T-shirt hacking.

Until next time :)
