it cant be <<"hello">>, it cant be #panel {...}  ... just a list [...]

it at least isn't documented

and why is the renderer function futilely checking there are no nested footer/headers?

You're completely right. It shouldn't be doing this kind of enforcement.  The list requirement was the result of wanting to make sure no other footer/header elements.

There's not really a good reason to enforce a compliance rule of this kind, so I went ahead and removed them:
