collapsed navbar button does not toggle

I am using nikola 7.3.1. I have cloned the nikola-site from github and built it with nikola build. I then view the output/index.html. When I make my browser window narrow, the navigation links collapse to a button on the right, but when I click the button nothing happens. That is, it does not expand to show the links on the navbar like the website getnikola.com does. Why does the navbar for my local getnikola site not behave the way getnikola.com does?

I get the same behavior using firefox and chrome with either the file index.html or with it being served by either IIS or nikola serve. My guess is that there is something peculiar to a local environment causing this. But I do not get this behavior when I use the bootstrap theme with sphinx built documentation.

I appreciate any help with this.

This is probably an issue with your browser ignoring JavaScript. I
don’t know why is this happening. Do you have NoScript or anything
like that?

I can’t reproduce locally on Linux with `nikola serve` (viewing the
.html file is bound to fail due to using // for http/https). Look at
your browser’s Web Inspector, particularly at the Network tab while
loading the page, and at the JS console.

Your suggestion to use the browser's web inspector is a good one. The problem seems to be with

I think I tracked down the root of the problem, which is how the symlinks are being handled on windows.

git on windows (at least the version that I am using) replaces the contents of the symlink file nikola/nikola/data/themes/base/assets/js/moment-with-locales.min.js is
../../../../../../bower_components/moment/min/moment-with-locales.min.js rather than the actual contents the file in the bower_components source tree. So that is what is getting incorrectly used by the templating engine.

I found a post on stack overflow, http://stackoverflow.com/a/16754068/3154588, that shows how to "patch" the symlinks in a repository clone on windows. This makes my immediate problem go away. But I think as long as the symlinks are in the nikola repository, there will be problems for windows users/developers.

We are aware of this problem, and you are right that it’s caused by
symlinks and Windows.

You see, we have 153 symlinks. And we fix them. But we use a list of
files to fix, which must be generated on a system that understands
symlinks. I forgot to do that when I introduced moment.js — and you
are the first Windows user to notice since November.

I updated the list. Everything will work fine in Nikola v7.3.2
(hopefully out by the end of March or so); you can also manually fix
your copy of Nikola or install from git.

Let’s hope Git developers will notice NTFS has junctions which could
be used for handling symlinks. I did that back on Windows XP, and it
was improved in subsequent releases.

Chris, I noticed a similar problem a while back when I was trying to get the tipue local search plugin to work. I kept encountering strange javascript errors with relative path references. I gave up trying to get that to work and did not bother posting a question, as I had other things to worry about than getting the local search working.

Is there some verification step that I can use to make sure that all links have been fixed on windows?

If something fails, setup.py should report an error.

The tipue search plugin exists independently though, and there are no
symlinks involved. What errors are you getting?

I do not remember the exact problems I had with tipue local search. But I think they were related to missing javascript functions, and, if I recall correctly, I saw some "../../.." in javascript code, which leads me to think it was related to this or another problem replacing the symlinks. When I get a chance to experiment with localsearch again, I will let you know if I have other problems.
