Visitors:A busy day on the platform - four-hundred and sixty-nine people made it up
the stairs, including a nice couple from North Carolina, and several Carter
Hill regulars. Thanks to everyone who had raptor questions or anecdotes!
Weather:Light south winds, mild temps (mid 50s to start, high in the mid 70s) and a
few clouds to help us pick out raptors. A very pleasant afternoon.
Raptor Observations:A decent Bald Eagle day, with five migrants and at least two local adults.
There was also some Turkey Vulture migration and a few smaller raptors and
buteos to keep things interesting.
Non-raptor Observations:A blackbird flock graced the woods edge in the early morning - it included
at least a few Rusty Blackbirds! Brown-headed cowbird, Red-winged BB, and
Common Gracle were also seen then or during the day. A few nice October
songbirds (RC Kinglet, BH Vireo, Palm Warbler) mixed in with an active
flock of the more common sparrows and yellow-rumps.
Predictions:Moderate-strong southwest winds will probably mean less overall raptor
movement, but perhaps strong flyers such as Peregrine, Merlin, and
Haliaeetus leucocephalus will fly by!
