Jane and I are off on our first day of vacation today. We first spent
about 3 1/2 hours sea watching with the gray skies and NE winds. A few
nice birds including migrating loons and scoters. We then went inland
and had more nice birds including 12 species of warblers. Our best
warbler watching so far this fall for us.

First the sea watch. Nearly all birds moving south except as noted
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Canada Goose 32 Migrating south in single flock.
American Black Duck 2
Green-winged Teal 6
Surf Scoter 89 Migrating. Mostly small flocks of less than 10.
Mostly adult males.
White-winged Scoter 19
Black Scoter 6
scoter sp. 221 Migrating.
Red-breasted Merganser 13 Single flock migrating. First flock of
the fall.
Red-throated Loon 2 Flying north just off Ragged Neck. 1 in
breeding plumage.
Common Loon 79 Migrating. Largest flock of 12.
loon sp. 5 Five in one flock. Could have been RTLO.
CORY'S SHEARWATER 3 Flew by heading north within 10 minutes after
we arrived. No others seen. Not too far out.
Northern Gannet 50 Not necessarily migrating.
Double-crested Cormorant 1,109 Largest skeins of 100.
Osprey 4
Black-bellied Plover 1
Laughing Gull 8 All adults. Moving south far offshore.
Merlin 2
Peregrine Falcon 5

Then highlights from various locations in order of our visits:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Chipping Sparrow - 50+ at Urban Forestry Center, but no sign of
Clay-colored Sparrow reported here yesterday.
White-crowned Sparrow - 1 juvenile. First of fall.
Philadelphia Vireo - 1 at Pickering Ponds.
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER - 1 at Pickering Ponds. Great views, but sadly
no photos. My earliest fall record by one day.
Blue-gray Gnatcather - 1 at Pickering Ponds.
American Golden Plover - 1 adult at Pease Tradeport from overlook near
sound barrier.
EURASIAN WIGEON - 1 apparent immature male with 30 American Wigeon at
Sunset Farm in Greenland.
COMMON TERN - 1 late juvenile at Sunset Farm. I would have preferred a
Caspian or Forster's Tern, which would have been new for me on Great Bay.
DICKCISSEL - 3 (!) at Great Bay Farm in Greenland. Two together in
brush pile along driveway.
