Poor Birding
Got there as the tide dropped and rapidly to low tide so prime time for tidal flat feeders. Flats were so quiet! Is there less food there then there used to be? Back in history there were always 10-20 Black-headed Gulls present all winter. Now, oddly, the BHGUs have decreased in all seasons and the Bonapartes have increased. Even larger gulls on the flats are not they used to be. Shorebird numbers in August to October are still excellent.
17 Great Cormorants on their winter loafing site. Most probably hopped over the isthmus to the main nesting hub of Newfoundland Great Cormorants in Placentia Bay
CHAPEL ARM
Black-headed Gull - 2 adults feeding on tidal flats
LONG HARBOUR
Northern Gannet - a small swarm diving for herring(?) deep in the community This is well known fishing area for its spring herring fishery.
Earlier during the day at St Michaels look-off. 40 Northern Fulmar (34 on the cliffs, six in flight). Adult male Merlin at Third Pond looked as good and fresh as a spring Migrant could be. BTW there was a report of a Great Egret at Third Pond on 13 April. With this in mind I scoured the shoreline of Third Ponds and the trees and gullies around the delta area of Third Pond.

They are nesting on the South-facing cliff of Ship Island. Scope is best to see them flying around and pick out the details on the ones perched on their nests.
Good luck!
