Ended up doing the Irish Loop today looking mainly for gulls and terns. Didn't do Cape Race or St Shotts.
LITTLE GULLS - 1) the usual 1st summer bird at Lower Pond, Witless Bay, present for nearly four weeks. 2) a 1st summer at Portugal Cove South bathing with the kittiwakes on the freshwater for 15 minutes then flew back out to sea. Darker wing bar and cap than the Witless Bay bird. Distant Photos of both birds.
Red-throated Loon - grand total of 18 which is a good count for fall migration let alone early summer.
PCS - 5
Biscay Bay - 6
Trepassey Beach - 5
St. Vincents/Peters River - 2
About 2/3 with red throat or partial red throat. A couple over summer on the Southern Avalon in a normal year but there is no obvious explanation for this many right now. When I lived on the Northern Peninsula there was always an influx of Red-throated Loons in June and early July that I figured were subadult migrating behind the schedule of adults. It could be the same phenomena here perhaps related to the dominate north winds this spring.
Other Birds
150 W.w. Scoter, 1 Black Scoter, 1 Long tailed Duck PCS/Biscay Bay. 100 W.w. Scoter Trepassey.
St. Michaels Northern Fulmar colony - counted 56 on the cliffs.
No sign of the Renews Willet and searched specifically for it.
