I accumulated 5 hours approximately on two back to back days standing in one spot waiting for this bird to show itself unobstructed by the very twiggy apple tree.
During the time I was there, I saw ring-billed and Herring Gulls fly overhead. I also saw several Robins, several Blue Jays, two Grey/Gray Jays, many goldfinch, two ravens, a pair of Northern Flickers, a few juncos, and heard a couple of unfamiliar sounds.
The Northern Mockingbird is a bird that according to a Peterson's Field Guide, does not stay still long. I can now attest to this being exactly correct. Even the times that the mocker would cooperate and land on the grass to peck at the fermented apples that have fallen since last autumn, it was still not a cinch to photograph. But, finally, after about three hours there today, I was pleased with one shot. This one.....

Do the people in the house mind you standing out there in front of their house for five hours?

Good point Bruce. I am a dedicated birder but I don't think I'd want cameras in front of my house for hours on end either! It's something I'd have to keep in mind if a rare bird ever lands in my yard.

I actually spoke with the home owner at length. And was granted permission. You may ask Mr. Harding if you wish.
Why is this being asked of me in the public forum? You have my personal and private messaging options. You leave me no choice by doing this than to reply as well in this open and public domain. I could say more, but, will refrain in the thought that it’s an oversite and not just another opportunity for haters that lurk here to try and further assasinate my good character.

Hi Shawn,
That's great that you spoke with the owner. Not everyone takes this step. Some birders know homeowners who have stopped reporting birds because they are uncomfortable having too many people around. If any of us post that we have spent hours at a private location it is worth acknowledging that it is with permission. That sends a positive message to the birding community. There are new birders joining our community all the time so these types of messages reinforce good birding etiquette.

Cheers,
Catherine

I was reminded that not all people are on FB. So, for those whom wish to see this beautiful Northern Mockingbird, I have also posted it in Flickr

Dave H. and myself spent a wonderful time photographing this beautiful bird and also chatting with the homeowner who delighted in our company. He showed us good old Newfoundland hospitality and said to stay as long as we'd like. I hope this answers Bruce's question !
