When rare birds are scares, I spend some time on a certain group of birds: the banded American Black Duck. They are equally (or more!) common as banded gulls but has drawn less attention, partly because they only carry federal bands which are hard to read, and partly because there are no people like Alex Bond to gulls.
My reading of their bands used to depend on photos taken, then I realized to read the numbers are much easier (well, still not so easy. I have to walk around a duck, binos in hand and eyes on band, and try not to fall over ). For now, I got replies to four of my reported birds, below is their information: gender, hatched/banded year, banded location:
1. male 2008/2008 Cripple cove rocks
2. male 2009/2009 Mundy pond
3. male 2011/2011 CARMANVILLE
4. female 2011 or earlier/2012 Old Bay bulls Rd x Stanleys Ln
Hope I would stop doing this soon, when new birds show up!

ps: Cripple cove rocks is far away from Cripple cove but close to Cape St. Francis
