An excellent day for birds and weather from St. Mary's to Biscay Bay today with Vernon, Megan, and Jay.
Lots of rain/snow and wind as we left St. John's before sunrise, but it cleared half way down the Salmonier Line and remained dry all the way to Renews. Barely any wind until later in the afternoon. The centre of this low pressure system was stalling around the Southern Avalon which made for ideal birding conditions.
Highlights, chronologically:
Pt La Haye:
King Eider - 2-3 males
Black-headed Gull - 1st cycle flew by the point
Ruddy Turnstone - 4
St. Vincent's to Peters River:
Snow Bunting - huge flock of 250 on the beach. Nothing else with them despite careful scanning.
Great Egret - pond between Peters River & St. Vincent's
PACIFIC LOON - great looks from Peters River with a tight flock of 120 (!!) Common Loons
Pied-billed Grebe - Peters River (with the domestic ducks of all things)
St. Shott's:
GRASSHOPPER SPARROW - at the cabbage patch near the lighthouse, pics
King Eider - 2 females, one 1st cycle male
Harlequin Ducks - 9
Black Scoter - 2
Trepassey:
Red-winged Blackbird - female at Cliff's
FORSTER's TERN - continues near the breakwater area
Double-crested Cormorant (and another at Biscay Bay)
Red-necked Grebe (inner bay)
At least 4 big flocks of 70+ goldfinches throughout the day...
All in all a great day with 4 lifers for Vernon, Megan & Jay :)
