Underscoring the long-standing cooperative relationship between the Newton Public Schools and the Newton Police Department, Superintendent Dr. G. Kennedy Greene and Police Chief Michael Richards announce that today they have made several safety presentations to students at both Newton High School and Halsted Middle School.

Due to a recent event involving an airsoft pellet handgun at the High School and in light of gun related tragedies occurring across America, officials felt it would be prudent to raise students’ awareness of the dangers, risks and consequences involving possession or use of firearms, imitation firearms and other dangerous weapons.  The presentation also incorporated instruction on what to do in order to stay safe if they encounter a firearm.

A discussion followed the presentation which provided an opportunity for students to ask questions and seek clarification about school policies and the role of law enforcement.

School officials and the Police Department take security very seriously and look forward to continuing to work together to maintain a safe environment for students.
