On Thursday January 5, 2017 at 5:21 PM, Newton Police Officers were called to the area of Mill Street in front of the 33 Mill Street Brookside Terrace Apartment building for a report of a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle.  Responding Officers immediately secured the scene of the accident, identified the driver and administered first aid to the pedestrian that was struck.  Newton First Aid Squad and Sussex Ambulance assisted at the scene and transported the pedestrian to the Newton Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The pedestrian was identified as Evelyn Strauss, age 60, of Newton NJ.  Initial investigation determined that Strauss walked across Mill Street from the northern side of the roadway into the driver’s lane of travel, as he was travelling south on Mill Street (County Route 519), and he was unable to stop in time, causing him to strike her with his vehicle, a 2005 Hyundai, causing damage to his windshield.  The driver was identified as Juan Cabrera, age 48, of Allentown PA.

Strauss will be issued a summons for Failure to Use Cross Walk.
