Wild Oakland Presents... Edible Weeds in Oakland!

Fee: $5 - $10 suggested donation

Aliens occupy Oakland. Let’s eat them! Turn the world into a free farmers’ market by learning to identify wild and feral edible plants that pervade the Bay Area. Expect to encounter at least a dozen tasty invasive species from Europe, South America, and Africa. Something is always in season.

Our guides for the day will be Philip Stark, chair of the Department of Statistics at UC Berkeley, and Kristen Rasmussen, Teaching Faculty in the Nutrition and Toxicology Department at UC Berkeley and the Culinary Institute of America. Stark & Rasmussen are studying the availability, nutritional value, and possible toxicity of wild edibles that volunteer in urban food deserts. You can read more about their research at http://forage.berkeley.edu/.

We’ll meet on Saturday, May 9 from 12-2 pm at the Laney Edible Garden between the E building and the Oakland Estuary on the south end of the Laney College campus. Parking is very limited, but the location is just a few blocks away from the Lake Merritt BART station. Biking, carpooling and public transportation are encouraged! Click here for a map of the area.

*** IMPORTANT!! ***
THIS WALK WILL NOT INCLUDE TASTING OR COLLECTING. Do not use this walk as your only source of information regarding edible weeds!! Please make sure you’re quite sure you know what you are doing before consuming any part of a plant, even if you are certain that you identified the species correctly.

Directions from Lake Merritt BART:
– Head south on Oak Street, away from the lake
– Turn left on 7th street
– Walk until you reach the tidal channel, but don’t cross the bridge
– Take a left and follow the tidal channel approximately 400 feet until you see the Laney Edible Gardens on your left.

When: Saturday, May 9 from 12-2 pm

Where: Laney Edible Garden between the E building and the Oakland Estuary on the south end of the Laney College campus.
