Jeff Thomas' NixiSat is no slouch either!!!

Both great clocks.  NixiSat is what started it all for me.

The acrylic cover of my NixiSat is starting to break down (crazing), probably due to UV, which would be odd as it's never been in direct sunlight...

The joints are going too...

Cast acrylic cracks more than extruded. I’ve had cast acrylic instantly craze using some quite mild solvents. Your problems may be down to plasticisers within the material leaching out and it becoming brittle as a result.

Hmmm. Thanks John.

It's the original cover, so I'll preserve it, but it's definitely suffering. I may get another made using the original as a template. Not only is there crazing, but the joints are weakening - it looks like there are bubbles in them...

Cheers

Nick, that’s not uncommon. My original nixisat case top is also showing some bubbling in the joints....

I've had acrylic cases made for two clocks (one is a Jeff Thomas WWVB clock) and a decatron thingy.... and eventually, all 3 developed bubbling in the joints. One was perfect for almost 10 years. The other two developed the bubbling within a year. All 3 made by the same local craftsman. None of them see any significant sunlight or temperature extremes.

I wonder if the adhesives have improved, or if newly made cases would still develop the same bubbling in the joints?

Same here Terry. Even my manufacturing guy doesn’t know why some bubble and some don’t. Would be interesting to hear from others who know more about this...

A cause of crazing of acrylic can be if it was flame polished before assembly and also the action of the solvent on the joints. It can be a slow process or quite rapid in time depending on the type of solvent glue used. The air bubbles are caused by micro imperfections in the joint that at first don't seem visible due to the freshness of the joint but appear with age.If a joint is inspected with a magnifying glass these are visible even when new.
