Hi Guys, I hope you will like my new nixie power supply NCH8200HV, smaller, lower input voltage and higher efficiency.
Input voltage range is 2.5-15v, suitable for lithium battery or USB power supply.
More details in my blog: http://www.nixieclock.org/?p=1454

Wow, this looks incredible. How hot does it get under load of 10x IN-12 in free air?

for 10x IN-12 tubes, current around 170V/20mA, test efficiency 86.67% with DC5V input, not hot, a bit warm.

Outstanding!

I have projects that this would work outstanding for!

What is the cost?

Where do I get it in the US?

Nice small form factor!

Will it be possible to hook up an external doubler/tripler?

Will you make an isolated version in the future (input/output isolation)?

Looks great, Yan. Please consider adding a logic level enable/disable line for your next version, 3.3v and 5v compatible.

I listed it on eBay just now, and I will send some to my partner in Berkeley CA, it will be quickly delivered to US customers.

Hi Yan,

I have a  couple on order from ebay...

My application is USB powered and I'll need to implement a shutdown function. Is there a shutdown mechanism on the board that you did not bring out to a pin? I'd be perfectly happy accessing the pin with added wires as needed.

Plan "B" is to switch the 5V input to the chip, but an existing logic level input would be simpler!

Many thanks for anything you might suggest!
Bob

Hi Bob, yes it's easy to accessing the pin of SHDN, Pin 10 of chip is SHDN, when it's low all IC functions are shut down, a logic high will start it.
Now, I connected pin10 to Vin, power module will always on, you can cut the copper tracking between Pin9 and Pin10, then bring it out, please check the picture attached.
Any problem please let me know.
Yan.

Hi Yan,

Many thanks  for your quick response!

The change you suggest is clear, perfectly meets my needs and I don't anticipate any trouble making the change.

Again, MANY THANKS!

Hi folks,

A bit more information from Yan... location and related equations for the output voltage setting resistors:

From the image below:

R2 = R3[Vout/Vref)-1]   Vref=1.25V
Vout = 172.02v  R2 = 10M   R3 = 73.2K
Vout = 171.70v  R2 = 5.1M  R3 = 37.4K
Vout = 176.08v  R2 = 10M   R3 = 71.5K

Yan - MANY THANKS!
Bob

Hello Yan,

where is the best place to order your power supply as all I see in Ebay are cheap copies?

Thanks.

Hi Roddy,

Only two sellers on eBay:

omnixie (for USA)

nixietubeclock (for all countries except USA)

you can find my NCH6100HV and NCH8200HV power supply in these two stores.

Please pay attention that there are a lot of counterfeit ones on the market. Those are poor quality, and have fire hazards.

Thanks.
Yan.

Yup ordered one too. But got the cheap ebay one by mistake. The site had your pictures on it so thought you must be selling there now.
What is the problem with those ones starting fires ? They look identical.
It's probably a trade secret but what is that inductor you are using ?
They are probably using a cheap knockoff I am guessing ?. That is causing fires maybe ?

Sorry to hear that, can you share some pictures of the one you got?
There're few sellers on eBay are using my pictures but deliver the fake one, I always using blue PCB board with gold plated and high-quality parts, that transformer is customized after so many tests.
I'm not sure what will happen using the fake one, hope it will work well, you should get the refund if it works not good!

Please check these two items, one is in my eBay store, another is in my partner's store located in Silicon Valley CA:

I have been buying the NCH8200HV myself.  Normally 2 or 3 at a time.  I have yet to have a problem.

I didn’t know there was a ‘counterfeit’ one.  I did notice that there are two kinds.  The mounting holes.  One with mounting the same on one side as the other.   Since I designed the circuit board to have the offset pins, I had made sure to buy that one.

Yes, I purchased because of price at about $15 each although I admit there was no way to know it is potentially a ‘counterfeit’ item and/or may cause fires.

I have had good luck with them.

I just published info about this design on my website including the schematic, bill of materials, and a link to download the gerber artwork. See:

Remember, this board specifically is laid out for the clock I wanted to integrate it with. You can change the board and remove the 8 volt regulator section if all you need is a standalone high voltage power supply. Disclaimer is included on my site, but just to be thorough: you assume all responsibility for making/modifying electronics, especially high voltage devices!

Have you made any for sale?

I have several of the clocks and never an issue with the power supply, but thought I would ask.

Hi Michail,

I have not made a batch of these (yet). This was an independent design done by me, and I just got around to assembling and testing my first prototype today.

Of course, I would not venture to sell any of these power supplies unless the creators of the mod six consented to the use of this module with their clock, mainly for liability reasons and/or warrantying the MOD-SIX electronics.

The design is open source as of now, so it is free to be explored by anyone on his/her own accord.

Thanks,
Kevin

Thanks for sharing, I knew there're some sellers bought NCH8200HVs or NCH6100HVs on my local online store and resell them on eBay, I prefer that what you bought is made by us, but they're always some 'counterfeit' one on eBay, even show my logo, my website and model number on the low-quality board, just like pictures attached. I always encourage everyone to build their own power supply even design an exactly same one, but I don't know why they marked my website and email address and logo on the board, I got so many emails to complain about the performance and quality, they may not know they got the 'counterfeit' one.

Hi

I've bought some of these modules from here.

Here's one new in the packet and another attached to a PCB.

IMG_9652.jpeg

IMG_9653.jpeg

I was very pleased with the one in use but I'm now very concerned about them given the comments that I found on this Reddit thread.

I'd be interested in hearing from the OP regarding this.

Has anyone had any issues with this module or know about the topic raised in the thread ?

Thanks.

Hi, Thank you for reaching me, NCH8200HV has been sold over 10Kpcs during the last five years, and many users in this group I believe. Here's a professional and detailed review from Kevin, a professional engineer at Microsoft, he did a great job making a nixie clock and detailed tested my NCH6100HV and NCH8200HV modules.
https://0x7d.com/2017/nixie-tube-clock/#Nixie_Power_Supply
I believe NCH8200HV is a good choice for the Nixie project, small, compact, has lower input voltage, and high efficiency, any issues please feel free to contact me.

Yan,
Do you have a shop or a reseller in Europe ? or an Aliexpress  reliable store ?
https://www.ebay.com/str/nixietubeclock is off,
your amazon shop is not availlable in EU and any search on Amazon France is redirecting only on
"iHaospace Module Boost NCH8200HV - Haute tension - DC - Tube lumineux pour horloge Nixie - Compatible avec batterie au lithium - Entrée USB 5 V. Marque : iHaospace"
and since Brexit, all import from England is strongly taxed...
