I think this would be a fabulous application for Nixie tubes but there is very little out there. Not being an electrical engineer, designing one myself is not an option. I did find this one below but no updates and the schematic may as well be gibberish to me. Does anyone know if there are any other designs?

There is also the Schober auto tuner AT-1. However it is a tuner based
off a strobe disc and a combination of 12AU7/12AX7 tubes and four NE-2
neon's. Page 149 of the Richard Dorf book "electronic musical
instruments". It would be similar to the Conn.
