programmable access to graph created by neo4j

I would like to have the nodes, relationships and their xy coordinate of the neo4j graph  available through an API.    I would then alter the shapes of the nodes, add behavior to the nodes, and add a third (or more) dimensions of graph nodes..   Comments?
