3-day visit by the Vibrant Gujarat delegation led by Mr. Bharat Lal, Resident Commissioner, Government of Gujarat to Canada, a partner country to Vibrant Gujarat Summit – 2015, created huge interest among the business community, investors, government officials and NRIs of Canada. The delegation from Gujarat reached Montreal on Monday and spent one day in Montreal and next two days in Toronto. The focus was to promote Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit – 2015 and to attract businesses and investment in Gujarat. The delegation also focused on encouraging partnership for better education and skill development, and create opportunities for the people of Gujarat.
The major highlight of the visit to Montreal was the meet organized by the Quebec India Business Council, Export Quebec and High Commission of India in Canada. The event was attended by about 100 CEOs and directors, senior officials, businessmen and professionals working in and around Quebec province of Canada. During the event, a presentation showcasing opportunities in Gujarat was made by Shri Bharat Lal and a film on forthcoming Vibrant Gujarat Summit -2015 was also shown. The Deputy High Commission Mr. Tsewang Namgyal also spoke on the occasion. The Quebec authorities and other speakers expressed interest that business and economic relationship between Gujarat and Canada will grow further. The event was followed by the meetings of Canadian business and industry leaders with various members of the delegation. The Canadian companies and Quebec authorities were extended invitation to participate in the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit – 2015 to be held at Gandhinagar.
The delegation also met the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) authorities, which is one of the largest universities in Montreal with a student base of over 40,000. UQAM has collaborated with several universities across the world. The delegation discussed the possibility of collaboration between UQAM and educational institutions of Gujarat. Mr Bharat Lal alongwith other delegate members extended a cordial invitation to participate in the forthcoming International Conference of Academic Institutes (ICAI) - 2015, which will provide the UQAM the opportunity to explore and partner with educational institutions of Gujarat.
The delegation also had one-on –one meetings with other prominent Canadian companies and organizations like CAE Inc, Concordia University and CRIAQ (Consortium for Research and Innovation in Aerospace in Quebec) based at Montreal.
The delegation then headed to Toronto (Ontario), wherein it had a series of the meetings with top Canadian companies and investors like ReichmannHauer Capital Partners, a business building oriented principal investing and private equity firm based in Toronto. The delegation also met Canaccord Genuity which is Canada’s largest investment bank. They promised stated that they would bring a delegation of Canadian companies that can partner with companies based in Gujarat in the field of agriculture, agro-processing, fertilizer, skill development, etc.
The Canada – India Business Council (CIBC) organized a meet which was attended by more than 60 top business and industry leaders of Canada. During the meet, Mr. Akhilesh Mishra, Counsel General of India in Toronto highlighted the current business and investment environment in India. He highlighted the policies of the Government of India and Gujarat. In the meet, Bombardier who is working in Gujarat also shared its experience, highlighting the ease in doing business in Gujarat and exhorted the Canadian companies to come to Gujarat. Mr. Bharat Lal made a presentation about recent progress and various opportunities in Gujarat. He highlighted the policy-driven environment in the state and various initiatives taken by the Chief Minister Smt. Anandi Ben Patel. On behalf of the State Government, he extended the invite to Canadian business communities and government authorities to participate in Vibrant Gujarat Summit.
During the two days in Toronto, the delegate members met prominent Canadian companies and educational institutes like Seneca College, Sun Life Insurance, Open Text Corp, Centennial University, Fairfax Financial Holdings, Blackberry, University of Waterloo (Institute of Quantum Computing) and visited MaRS Discovery District (MaRS DD) and Bombardier’s manufacturing plant.
Mr Bharat Lal also met Mr Prem Watsa, Founder Chairman, and Chief Executive of Fairfax Financial Holdings, a very prominent investor of Canada. They held a wide ranging talks and Mr. Vatsa who is also called as the "Canadian Warren Buffett" showed keen interest in visiting Gujarat and explore the possibility of investment. He expressed his desire to work with the Government of Gujarat.
Indo-Canadian Chamber of Commerce (ICCC) also organized a conference-cum-networking meet for the benefit of visiting delegation, which was attended by over 150 delegates primarily from the Indian diaspora in Canada. The event saw presence of Mr Akhilesh Mishra, Counsel General of India in Toronto; Mr Bal Gosal, Hon’ble Minister of Sports, Canada and Mr Frank Scrapitti, Hon’ble Mayor of Markham. A brief presentation was shared by Mr Bharat Lal highlighting the emerging opportunities in Gujarat and the conducive environment it provides to the business community. The other dignitaries also appreciated the Canada - Gujarat business relationship and have expressed desire to strengthen it even further. The organizers extended support and interest in bringing a delegation of prominent Canadian companies to the Summit as they believe that it is truly a Global Platform for Business.
During the visit, delegation also highlighted the forthcoming IndiaPlast, an exhibition cum conference to be held on 29 January to 3rd February in Gandhinagar. The people working in the sector showed keen interest in the event.
The other members of the delegation Mr A K Vijay Kumar (GSPL) and industry captains Mr. Akhil Verma (ONGC Videsh), Mr. Suvas Barot (Creative Infocity), Mr. Balrajsinh Parmar (Suzlon Energy), Mr. Jaimin Shah (Dev IT Ltd), Mr. Prashant Mehta (GVFL) and Mr. Krishnamoorthy (Athena Emra Power), Mr. Sameer Sharma (Essar Steels), Mr U M Pandit (iNDEXTb), Mr Sudhanshu Gupta (CII) and Ms Somya Jain (KPMG) also participated in various meetings and conferences to promote Gujarat and attract business and investment to Gujarat.
The delegation aimed at promoting Gujarat and India as attractive business and knowledge destination, succeeded in creating a buzz among business and industry leaders of Canada. The enthusiasm among people in Canada towards India in general and Gujarat in particular showed that Canadian business and industry is looking towards Gujarat as a favoured destination for doing business and making investment.
