I've loaded Universe 10 onto a Windows 7 ult 64bit system. Everything works great, except for printing.  Regardless of the printer selected, or even printing to a textfile, the print queue entries all get a status of "Error - Printing".

Any ideas as to what's going wrong?

Thanks in advance....

Well, upgrading to windows 10 might be your problem. A lot of folks I know are having problems printing with windows 10. Something to do with windows 7 drivers not working with windows 10 and the inability to get windows 10 drivers for 'older' printers. I'd check with the printer's manufacturer web site to see if windows 10 drivers are available. Windows 10 broke a LOT of things that used to work just fine in windows 7.

Most printer drivers written for earlier versions of Windows will still
work (and install) on Windows 10. You might need to reload them

Also, you (the OP) don't say whether Windows printing in general works.
I'd take that as a first step.

Finally, if the Windows name of the printer has changed with the upgrade,
that could mess things up.

Hi All
Mark is using Windows 7 not Windows 10.
It is Universe 10 that is the issue. Unfortunately the Rocket site limits me to reading about D3 requirements but I think that it is unlikely that Universe would only work on one version of Windows.
It is my experience with Windows 10 64 bit and Windows 7 64 bit that everything works fine. I use Bob Rasmussen's Printwiz on both platforms with no problem. In fact I use LPR on the Windows for fancy footwork on HP printers as well as using RAW generic so I would look to the Universe set up.

When you say "print queues" are you referring to looking at the results of a Universe TCL command to list print jobs?
Or are you referring to looking at Windows printer queue information window?

Hi Mark
If it is the Windows Printer Queue then your first action is to print a test page from the properties selection. Of course you must delete the errors first.
The UV section is working correctly if it has got this far.

Hi Peter,

The Windows test page print works fine.  But when I send the printout from Universe, it still produces the "Error - Printing" message.

I have set up a printer called TEXTFILE which prints to a file.  The test print goes to the file (after prompting the user) o.k., but when sending from Universe, again the "Error - Printing" messages comes up..

Mark,

I don't recall, what kind of printer is this with?

What Windows driver?

Is it possible you are trying to use a "Windows-only" printer? I have seen
scenarios in which a low-level print job hung in the Windows spooler, for
the simple reason that the printer could not accept a low-level print job.

Bob,

This is happening with all printer drivers right now.  Even with the Generic/Text driver which I have going to a 'file' port.  The setup was working fine until a crash on the C drive forced a rebuild/reload.  Now it's like I can't get anything to print at all..  And there isn't any messages that I can find in the system to indicate the type of error it is..

Hi
I have just had to fix one of my sites where a "smart" tech changed my LPR to a Generic RAW rather than the HP Universal driver that caused exactly this circumstance.
As the Windows test page is working and it is not a Windows printer as Bob pointed out it is likely that there is something in the file that comes from Universe. In my case generic choked on a simple Access list.
I would check two spots;firstly I would copy the spooler entry on to Windows as a text and just print it from Windows Explorer; secondly I would edit the spooler item to see if it has any setup characters in it - my favourite D3 tool for that is DUMP GX, no doubt Universe has something similar..
