Replying/composing from Trash doesn't save message in Sent ... ???

I have noticed that if I reply to a message that resides in the Trash folder, or if I compose a message from within Trash, the message successfully gets sent to the recipient, but a copy doesn't end up going into the Sent folder. The outgoing copy remains in Trash.

Is there something special about the Trash folder that keeps outgoing messages from being saved in Sent? Or could this be due to some sort of mis-configuration on my part?

I figured out the problem ... it was indeed a configuration issue on my end.
